Hintersee: Hotels and Accommodation

Hintersee lies at the southeastern end of the Ahlbecker Seegrund fenland in the Ueckermünder Heide. The fenland was designated a nature conservation area in 1987 and is considered Germany’s largest actively growing calcareous intermediate fen.

Nature

Am Stettiner Haff Nature Park is characterized by undeveloped lagoon coastline, lagoon meadows, the extensive forests of the Ueckermünder Heide, river lowlands and the Brohmer Mountains. The Ueckermünder Heide is considered one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Central Europe. Between Rieth and Hintersee, extensive middle-aged pine forests stretch through the Riether Neuhaus forestry district.

History

Hintersee developed from the Zopfenbeck colony, founded around 1745 on the southern shore of the former Ahlbeckscher See. Old and converted half-timbered houses recall this period of its founding. The village is also characterized by beautifully restored settler houses surrounded by kitchen gardens and farmyards.

Culture

St. Johannes Hintersee was completed in 1899. The organ was built by the Grüneberg organ-building company in Stettin at the beginning of the 19th century. One of the two bells is older than the church; St. Johannes Hintersee also has a baptismal font dating from the time of its construction.

The hiking trail from Hintersee towards Stettin leads to Barnimskreuz near the Polish border. According to local tradition, the Pomeranian Duke Barnim II died there in 1295. Along the hiking trail from Ludwigshof to Hintersee, the route passes wooden sculptures created during a woodcarving symposium.

Routes

The former route of the Randow narrow-gauge railway between Hintersee and Rieth has been converted into a cycle path approximately eight kilometers long. The Hintersee–Rieth cycle path is decorated with old railway signs and forms part of the long-distance Oder–Neisse Cycle Route.

The Stettiner Haff and the Ueckermünder Heide offer a variety of hiking and cycling tours, allowing visitors to explore nature and places of interest independently.
