Church: history, carved figures and organ

Liepgarten Church was first mentioned in an official document in 1270 and once belonged to the Augustinian monastery in Ueckermünde. Together with its former monastic affiliation, this places the church within a longer history of the village and the church.

Three carved figures have been preserved in the church: two bishops and a depiction of Saint Peter holding the keys to heaven. They date mainly from the period of rebuilding after 1488. Another chapter in the church’s history is the Grüneberg organ. It was installed in 1862 and extensively restored in 1995. The figures and the organ represent different aspects for visitors interested in culture to consider: sculptural works and an instrument with its own history of installation and restoration. Their historical reference points are clearly far apart: the carved figures date mainly from the period of rebuilding after 1488, while the installation and restoration of the organ mark later stages. Visitors comparing historical artefacts can thus view the artworks and the history of the instrument as different layers of the church’s past.

Local history museum in the old school

The Liepgarten local history museum is located in the old school in the centre of the village. Covering about 100 m², it offers insights into the development of the village and two historic trades: brickmaking and barge transport. Rather than church art, it focuses on local history and former occupations. The two trades can also be understood as distinct fields of work: brickmaking centres on producing bricks, while barge transport centres on moving goods by barge. In this way, the local history museum connects the development of the village with a comparison between brick production and transport by barge.

Apothekerberg and views of the landscape

The observation tower on Apothekerberg is the landmark and flagship of the municipality of Liepgarten. At 24 m, Apothekerberg is the highest elevation in the area around Liepgarten. From the observation tower, you can enjoy views of the landscape in the Szczecin Lagoon region. The view from the tower offers a different way to explore the area than focusing on individual historical artefacts: instead of highlighting a single work or the development of the village, it directs attention to the region’s landscape. Visitors weighing their interests in cultural history and scenery can take this distinction into account when choosing a destination.
