Lagoon landscape and nature

Mönkebude lies on the northeastern edge of the approximately 125 km², heavily wooded “Haffküste” (Lagoon Coast) landscape protection area. The Szczecin Lagoon near Mönkebude offers numerous opportunities for water sports and nature watching. Different interests can therefore go hand in hand: experiences on the water and observing nature. The town’s location on the lagoon and its connection to the landscape protection area give it a distinct natural setting.

Local history and architecture

The Fischerstube local history museum documents the history of Mönkebude, first mentioned in 1244 as an old Slavic settlement under the name “Doblowitz,” and its development into a seaside resort, using facts and photographs. St. Peter’s Church adds a specific building to this picture of the town: it was built in 1933–1934 to a design by the Stettin architect Rudolf Sack. In Mönkebude, you can encounter both an early reference to the settlement and a building from the 20th century.

Hiking and exercise

The Mönkebude Tourist Information Office provides information about a Nordic fitness park and lends out walking poles. Hiking options include herb walks with Kräuterlieschen and night hikes for children in the Mönkebude forest with foresters. The Mönkebude Deichlauf has been a popular run along the scenic coast for years. Check the specific dates for the hikes and the run before your trip. Alongside water sports and nature watching, you can also choose activities involving walking, running and exercising in the countryside.

Getting here and ferry connection

Trains between Berlin and Stralsund stop several times a day in Ducherow and Pasewalk. There is a connection from Pasewalk to Ueckermünde; from there, you can reach Mönkebude by local public transport or taxi. Check the timetables before your trip so you can plan your journey via the stations mentioned.

The Zeesenboot “Ghost” is intended to operate as a ferry to and from Usedom for cyclists and cycling groups. Mönkebude is the port of departure and destination; Usedom (Ostklüne) can be arranged as the port of departure. Ferry operations are subject to the applicable operating conditions. Therefore, check specific dates and availability before your trip. For cycle tourists, this is a separate option from travelling by train, and its planning depends on the operating conditions.

Vorpommern-Greifswald as a wider regional setting

Across the wider destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald, the three nature parks cover almost 40% of the district’s area. The Ueckermünde Heath invites visitors to hike, cycle and ride there. Regional cycling routes for exploring the district include the Szczecin Lagoon Circular Route and the North German Romanticism Route; the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, part of the EuroVelo EV10 route, also passes through the district. This broader perspective offers additional nature and cycling themes to consider when deciding whether to focus on Mönkebude or on Vorpommern-Greifswald as a destination.
