Lolland between Coast, Islands and Cultural Heritage

Lolland has more than 300 kilometres of coastline, offering a wide range of opportunities for outdoor activities.

Nature

Nakskov Fjord Nature Park is part of Danske Naturparker and comprises ten large and small islands as well as the 7.5-kilometre-long headland of Albuen. Between islands, islets, bays and promontories, the nature park offers sheltered waters for kayaking.

Maribosøerne Nature Park encompasses the lakes Søndersø, Røgbølle Sø, Hejrede Sø and Nørresø, as well as their surroundings in a manor landscape of fields, meadows, marshes and woodland. It has been included in Friluftsrådet’s Danske Naturparker certification scheme. The nature centre at Maribo Søndersø offers nature experiences; in summer, boat trips on Søndersø with Anemonen are also available.

Albuen encompasses impressive natural surroundings and a unique cultural environment that bears witness to human activity over several centuries. At Albuetangen, visitors can walk along a narrow headland between the Langelandsbælt and Nakskov Fjord.

Culture

Dodekalitten is a monument situated in a Lolland field overlooking Smålandsfarvandet, combining sculpture and music in a landscape steeped in history. It consists of twelve stone pillars, 7 to 9 metres high, arranged in a circle with a diameter of 40 metres. Paid guided tours with the artist Thomas Kadziola are available at Dodekalitten.

Pederstrup is a manor house museum on Lolland that tells the story of the Reventlow family and the lives of the aristocracy and servants 200 years ago.

The monastery ruins in Maribo are open to visitors free of charge all year round and are located next to Maribo Cathedral and Maribosøerne Nature Park. Maribo Cathedral was built in the 15th century as part of a double monastery and is now an important testament to the history and cultural heritage of Maribo. At Maribo Cathedral, visitors can see a tombstone and the crypt with the coffin.

Richard Winther’s House in Vindeby is a living work of art combining painting, sculpture and photography. More than 55 original paintings cover its walls and ceilings.

Activities

The 68-kilometre Cykeløerne route is a multi-day cycling tour along Lolland’s northern coast and across the islands of Fejø, Femø and Askø. The route can be reached via ferry connections from Kragenæs to Femø, Fejø and Askø. Lolland Municipality has several ferry terminals providing connections to Femø, Fejø and Askø, including two terminals in Kragenæs.

Reventlow Park has a permanent orienteering course developed jointly with Maribo Orienteringsklub. Klosterruten is one of two modern pilgrimage routes that intersect in Maribo.

Knuthenborg Safaripark has large animal areas where visitors can observe savannah animals and predators from their vehicle. Limpopoland at Knuthenborg Safaripark includes a large natural playground, a water slide, rafts, a zip line, climbing towers, a water playground and a maze. At Knuthenborg Safaripark, visitors can wash out real fossils, work limestone pieces in the limestone quarry and take part in excavating a mysterious giant fossil.

Food and Drink

Østergaard Vinmageri produces handcrafted speciality wines from locally grown grapes and fruit from its own vineyards. The winery offers group tours with tastings and sells its wines in the farm shop.

The islands on the Cykeløerne route are known for producing apples, apple juice and cider. Lolland’s gastronomic offering includes local produce from the island’s fertile soil, as well as fish from Smålandshavet and the Baltic Sea.
