Coast and landscape

The beach at Vesternæs is protected by medium-sized stones serving as slope reinforcement. The nearby “Langs Fjorden” adventure route is 37 kilometres long in total and is also suitable for hiking. It runs between Nakskov and Albuen along a fine, car-free gravel section on the dyke.

Peter Hansen's Garden

Peter Hansen's Garden covers 55,000 square metres. In 2017, the garden was expanded with a 25,000-square-metre arboretum. Its design is mainly inspired by English gardens. At the same time, Peter Hansen's Garden is home to one of Northern Europe's largest privately owned plant collections.

The garden's individual areas also offer different reasons to visit. The ponds at Peter Hansen's Garden are home to thousands of green frogs. Benches are available at several locations, as well as a pavilion in the old arboretum where visitors can eat food they have brought with them. The nursery belonging to the garden offers a wide selection of unusual and rarer plants. Here, botanical themes, ponds, arboretum areas and quiet places to spend time are brought together in one specific excursion destination.

Routes and regional orientation

Movia bus route 718 runs from Nakskov towards Langø and Vesternæs. The “Langs Fjorden” route is also relevant for finding your way around the area: along its course, it connects Nakskov and Albuen and runs over the dyke there. Those who would like to include different landscape and cultural sites during their stay can thereby mentally connect Vesternæs with other destinations in the immediate surroundings, without assuming specific distances or journey times.

Mills and history

Kappel Post Mill was built around 1730 and operated until 1935. It stands between the villages of Sjunkeby, Vesternæs and Knubbeløkke. It is possible to grind flour at Kappel Post Mill. In suitable weather conditions, sails can be attached to the mill's sails, and the mill can operate.

During the summer opening period, members of the mill association are present at Kappel Post Mill on Tuesday afternoons and can provide information about the mill. In the immediate vicinity of Vesternæs, Albuen also preserves traces of the medieval large herring markets. There is also a lighthouse and a coastal viewpoint there. In 1464, Hellig Trefoldigheds Kilde attracted a significant pilgrimage.

Kappel Church nearby is another point of reference for the area's churches. Access is arranged by contacting the pastor. You should therefore plan this visit differently from freely accessible sites: contacting the pastor is part of the access arrangements.

Ålehoved by the water

At Ålehoved, there is coastal protection made of large stones and deep water close to the shore. In calm winds, it is possible to wade there carefully; waders are not required for this, but may be advantageous. For fishing, sea trout can be caught in spring and autumn, while flatfish and cod can be caught from autumn through early spring. These seasonal details make Ålehoved particularly interesting for visitors who plan their water-based activities according to the season and weather conditions.
