Beach by the harbour

Bandholm’s beach is located at Bandholm harbour on the Sakskøbing Fjord and offers views of Askø. At 100 metres wide, it shapes the town’s coastal setting. There are tables and benches on the beach. Bandholm harbour is located in the town of Bandholm on the Smålandsfarvandet. There is a regular ferry service from the harbour to Askø and Lilleø. The marina with around 100 berths is also part of the maritime setting. The harbour area thus brings together the beach, ferry service and marina in Bandholm. The island connection remains specific: Askø can be seen from the beach, and the regular ferry service to Askø and Lilleø departs from the harbour. There are tables and benches on the beach; the view of Askø is part of this waterfront area.

Railway and historic buildings

Bandholm has a distinctive railway history. The railway line between Maribo and Bandholm was inaugurated on 2 November 1869. Bandholm station was built for the opening of the railway in 1869; the main building was listed as a protected historic building in 1972. Hvedemagasinet also reflects the town’s economic past. It was built in 1850 and constructed for the storage of 500–600 tonnes of grain. The building has cultural-historical and architectural value. Bandholm Church was built in 1873–1874 according to a design by the architect H. Sibbern.

Heritage railway and bathing establishment

The Maribo–Bandholm heritage railway has 50–60 operating days each year. These operating days define a limited annual period for visits by heritage railway. This period is therefore decisive for planning; the figure does not describe daily operation. Another special feature is the Bandholm bathing establishment: it is Denmark’s oldest bathing establishment and dates from 1870. Together with the beach by the harbour, this part of Bandholm provides access for travellers interested in historic bathing and transport culture. The bathing establishment also stands as a separate historic reference by the water.

Paths along the protected coastline

The road Strandparken runs west from Bandholm harbour along the coast through a park-like, protected area with public access. The coastline west of Bandholm is protected and publicly accessible. A path leads from the publicly accessible area along the eastern shore of Svanevig. The paths therefore run in two directions by the water: Strandparken leads west from the harbour, while the path at Svanevig runs along the eastern shore. The path along the eastern shore of Svanevig adds another publicly accessible route to the coastal area there. By the water, Strandparken west of the harbour and the path along the eastern shore of Svanevig thus run in different directions.
