Holeby: Sugar Factory, Beach and Lolland Island

Sugar Factory and Workers’ Houses

The Holeby Sugar Factory, also known as Lolland Sugar Factory, dates from 1872. The factory complex includes directors’ and employees’ residences, stables and garages, the factory grounds, a gasworks, a locomotive shed and a weigh house. The Holeby Sugar Factory tells the story of the beginnings of the sugar industry on Lolland. It brings together production, residential and utility areas.

Another historic structure is Holeby Haveby. It was planned in 1873, and around 40 workers’ houses were built there as semi-detached homes with adjoining kitchen gardens. The structure of Holeby Haveby has been preserved along three parallel streets. Northeast of the sugar factory, the settlement is one of the defining heritage features of this cultural setting. Together with the factory complex, it connects working life, housing and local development in Holeby. The three parallel streets give the settlement a clear spatial order; the semi-detached houses and kitchen gardens preserve the residential character of the workers’ settlement in Holeby’s townscape.

Visible Railway Traces and Paths to the Beach

In Holeby, the railway station and the railway corridor running past the sugar factory grounds are still recognisable. These two elements add to the picture of a place whose industrial history is evident not only in its buildings, but also in its station and railway corridor.
