Soesmarke: Cycling Routes, Birdwatching and Local History

At Spurvestræde in Soesmarke, there is a signposted entrance to the “Fuglenes fristeder” cycling route. From there, the route leads through Storskoven and along quiet country roads, several of which have cycle paths. Around the Guldborgsund Tunnel, the route offers views across the Guldborgsund. The views over the sound refer to the area around the tunnel. When choosing your pace, the sections with cycle paths can be taken into account separately. The route has a signposted entrance at Spurvestræde in Soesmarke; it also includes Storskoven, quiet country roads and the area around the Guldborgsund Tunnel.

Forest, country roads and Kallø Grå Reserve

Bicycles may be brought into Kallø Grå Reserve, but they must be walked there. For route planning, this section should be treated as a walking section rather than a normal cycling section. On a longer ride, the change from cycling to walking should be included in the schedule. The rule concerns movement within the reserve and is therefore limited to this specific part of the route.

A second circular route from Guldborg

“A Haven for Birds” is another cycling route. It is 35 km long, starts and ends in nearby Guldborg, and is signposted with symbols in the form of birdwatching towers. As a circular route, it can be included in a separate cycling day plan with Guldborg as the starting and finishing point. The specified length of 35 km provides the route framework; additional birdwatching stops can be scheduled alongside it.

Birdwatching in two protected areas

Kallø Grå is one of the two bird protection areas on the “Fuglenes fristeder” route. There is a birdwatching tower in the reserve. There is also a birdwatching tower in the Majbølle Nor nature reserve. In the surroundings of Soesmarke lies Vestermark Møllesø, a beach meadow with a small lake and a good area for waders and geese. Those who make birdwatching the focus of a cycling tour can connect the towers at Kallø Grå and Majbølle Nor with the landscape site Vestermark Møllesø. At the beach meadow, nature observation focuses on waders and geese; the small lake is part of this location’s specific landscape.

Local history of Guldborgland Centralskole

There was a school in Soesmarke built in 1916. Guldborgland Centralskole was located in Soesmarke near Guldborg. Following its renovation, it opened on 17 April 1958. Today, the buildings are used as a cultural and leisure centre. The former school is a historical reference point for Soesmarke.

Soesmarke Rest Area

There is a toilet at the “Rasteplads Soesmarke” rest area. On a longer cycling tour, the rest area can be planned as a specific stop with sanitary facilities.
