Sandved: Fodsporet and railway town history

If you would like to combine nature trails and local history on your trip, Sandved offers both: Fodsporet runs as a traffic-safe and scenic paved path to Næstved, Skælskør and Slagelse. At the same time, the town’s well-preserved railway town setting points to a clearly recognisable historical character. This allows you to combine the trail experience and exploring the town in the same destination.

Trails through the landscape and woodland

The landscape includes the Skovly nature site in Kristiansholms Plantage, a woodland near the beach. Sandved Dog Forest is connected to Fodsporet and lies about one kilometre west of Sandved. The Saltø Å river winds through the area around Sandved and attracts fish and plant growth. Woodland, proximity to the beach and the course of the river provide different natural points of reference, while the connection between the dog forest and Fodsporet establishes a clear link to the trail network.

Bridges and seasonal trail connections

A bridge from Hårslevvej in Sandved provides direct access to the woodland across the Saltø Å. The bridge from Sandved across the Saltø Å also provides access to a network of trails extending to Holsteinborg Estate and the harbour at Bisserup. The Lokalrådet puts it in place in April, by agreement with the forest owner, and removes it again in October. This period is therefore a specific part of the orientation when planning routes.

Sandved as a former railway town

Sandved’s railway town developed around a station on the Næstved–Slagelse railway line. The station building was constructed in 1892. Sandved’s architecture is distinctly shaped by the town’s character as a former railway town. Sandved therefore offers a well-preserved railway town setting. For visitors interested in culture, the town’s history can be traced through the railway, the station building and the preserved townscape.

The cultural setting of the railway town of Sandved includes Sandved Hotel opposite the station. The Betahnia mission house, built in 1908, is also part of it. Fyrendal Church is located nearby, immediately next to Fyrendal Manor; its nave is Romanesque. In and around Sandved, you will therefore encounter both the architecture of the former railway town and distinctive historical architectural forms.

Meeting place in the centre

In the centre of Sandved, Mødestedet opened in 2018 in rented, home-like rooms in the old merchant’s courtyard on Langgade. It offers activities for different age groups there: a creative workshop, a youth club, a playgroup and a knitting club. Mødestedet’s programme also included communal meals followed by a church service on Tuesday evenings. The range therefore extends from creative and communal activities to regular evening events.

For practical orientation along the route, the area around the former station building includes a parking area at Fodsporet. Kristiansholms Plantage has a large nature playground at Næstved Municipality’s nature school. Together with the trail, woodland and historic buildings, this creates a townscape in which natural and cultural interests are visibly represented side by side.
