Niedźwiedzie: Hotels and accommodations

Niedźwiedzie is located in the Masurian Lake District, on the border between the Mrągowo Lake District and the Masurian Plain. Administratively, the village belongs to the Polish Warmian–Masurian Voivodeship, Szczytno County and the municipality of Szczytno.

History

Niedźwiedzie was founded around 1800 as a szkatułowa settlement on newly cleared land in the Chocholskie Forests. In 1819, 19 residents of the village received hereditary lease grants covering a total of 19 łans.

Culture

Szczytno is home to the renovated ruins of a castle of the Teutonic Order. The castle is also associated with Henryk Sienkiewicz’s novel “The Teutonic Knights”: Jurand of Spychowo was imprisoned and tortured there. The 46-metre-high town hall tower offers views over the town and the lake. The Protestant church on Warszawska Street, Szczytno’s oldest church, was built between 1717 and 1719 and preserves original elements of the Baroque altar and pulpit.

Nature and trails

The 42-kilometre cycling route Rowerem po Kolei runs from Szczytno to Biskupiec. It is an easy, blue-marked route laid out along a former railway embankment and has a bituminous cycle path. A side loop leads to the Kulka Nature Reserve and around Lake Łęsk. The Zabrodzie Nature Reserve protects stands of dwarf birch and wetland vegetation.

A promenade with cycle paths runs along the shore of Lake Domowe Duże in Szczytno. Baza Wodna rents out sailboats, a catamaran, pedal boats, kayaks and SUP boards. It also offers boat excursions and a municipal bicycle rental service, including a trailer option for small children.

Getting there

Szczytno has direct rail connections with Olsztyn, Ełk, Pisz, Braniewo and Chorzele. Olsztyn–Mazury Airport is located in Szymany, approximately 10 kilometres from Szczytno.
