If you want to include lakes, forests and active routes in your holiday plans, you can explore Szczycieński from two perspectives: Szczytno, with its central lakes, and Powiat Szczycieński, with its forest landscapes and trails. This makes it easier to decide whether the urban setting or seasonal nature and activity themes should shape your trip more strongly.

Lakes and City History in Szczytno

Domowe Duże and Domowe Małe lie in the center of Szczytno. Domowe Duże, also known as Długie, covers 51 hectares and is connected to Domowe Małe. A city beach lies on the larger of the two lakes. A tourism description updated in 2016 mentions a sandy city beach and a beach volleyball court by the lakes. For the eastern end of the shore, it notes a lit pier with benches and tables, as well as a landing stage by the beach. If the beach or its facilities are part of your plans, check their current status in advance.

If you want to explore the city’s history as well as its lakes, you can find multimedia devices in the ruins of the Teutonic castle. Visitors can operate them themselves and access information about the city, the castle and the region. Check access arrangements before your visit.

Forests and Seasons

The forests in Powiat Szczycieński offer different highlights depending on the season: in summer, there are shady spots and access to forest lakes; in autumn, mushroom picking draws visitors from all over the country; and in winter, the forests become cross-country skiing trails. For hikers, there are forest nature trails in the Szczytno, Korpele, Jedwabno and Spychowo forest districts; check locally to see if they are accessible. The powiat also has hundreds of kilometres of prepared trails. As routes may change, check their course before setting out as well.

Lakes, Rivers and Kayaking Routes

Sasek Wielki is the largest lake in Powiat Szczycieński. Its elongated, trough-shaped form and the wooded hills surrounding it create a different landscape from the lakes in the center of Szczytno. Nearby, the first quiet stretches of the Krutynia wind along the eastern edge of the powiat, including in the area around Spychowo.

The route also matters when choosing a kayaking trip: the route on the Omulew begins at Lake Omulew in the Nidzica municipality, outside the powiat, passes through the Jedwabno municipality and then crosses the border into the Wielbark municipality. The kayaking route on the Sawica is considered difficult because of numerous obstacles, especially fallen trees, stronger currents and many bends. Water conditions may vary, so take them into account when planning.

Cycling Along Different Routes

The Szczytno–Dźwierzuty–Biskupiec cycling route is about 42 kilometres long and paved; it extends beyond the powiat. “Rowerem po kolei” runs through Powiat Szczycieński along the former railway line No. 262. This gives you two different points of reference: a paved section with an approximate stated length and a route along a former railway line. Check the route conditions before you ride.
