Ulricehamn on Lake Ã…sunden: Nature, Trails and Culture

Ulricehamn is particularly well suited to discovery via Lake Åsunden and the trails around the town. The Åsundenleden is a hiking trail approximately 49 kilometres long that runs around Lake Åsunden. Along its route, it passes the Korpeboberg and Kråkebo nature reserves. Another trail, the Björnöleden, leads through the Komosse nature reserve, one of southern Sweden’s largest wetland areas.

Nature

The Galtåsenleden leads to Galtåsen, the highest point in Västergötland. The summit is 362 metres above sea level. This means that, alongside the lakeside landscape of Åsunden, wetlands and a ridge are also represented as different natural settings in Ulricehamn’s hiking options, without the individual trails having the same landscape character.

Vattenverket in Ulricehamn is located near Lake Ã…sunden and is now surrounded by a natural area with a lakeside promenade. Sturebadet is near the centre of Ulricehamn; the cold-bath house and the bus station, among other things, are located nearby.

Culture and History

Ulricehamn has medieval origins and was formerly called Bogesund. Six cultural and historical buildings stand in Stadsparken. Historic buildings were relocated to Stadsparken between 1910 and 1948, most of them during the first seven years of this period.

The preserved station house in Ulricehamn still conveys an impression of what the town looked like when rail transport was the most important means of transportation. Ulricehamn station house is a castle-like railway station building dating from 1906. Gamla Vattenverket is a building constructed in 1914 in the National Romantic style, with its original machinery still in working order.

Folkets Hus presents opera and theatre performances as well as numerous films. The building is over 100 years old and has largely been preserved in its original condition. A mural depicting Ada Nilsson can be found in Ulricehamn at the corner of Färgaregränd and Storgatan.

Active Trails

Ulricehamn has 70 kilometres of car-free, paved trails on former railway lines. Lassalyckan has trails and tracks that can be used in both summer and winter. It also has marked mountain-biking trails with varying levels of difficulty.

Lassalyckan has a pump track with jumps and ramps on a hilly wooden course. The different types of routes therefore range from paved paths and seasonally used tracks to technically designed mountain-biking facilities and the pump track.

The immediate address area of Ulricehamn includes Liared, Strängsered, Vegby, Älmestad, Marbäck, Gällstad, Hökerum, Timmele, Trädet, Ulricehamn, Grönahög, Tvärred, Dalum, Blidsberg and Hulu.

Leisure and Water

Canoes or Canadian canoes can be rented at Prången bathing area. Ulricaparken has a bathing area with a jetty and sandy beach. The playground there includes, among other things, an obstacle course, a climbing net and a zip line.

The skate park is open to the public every day of the week. Through Ungas fritid, skateboards, kick scooters and protective equipment can be borrowed free of charge for trying out the skate park. The swimming and sports centre offers swimming, baby swimming, mini swimming and water aerobics; it also has two pools and a water play area.

Ulricehamn’s cold-bath house on Lake Åsunden offers cold bathing. All treatments include a swim in Lake Åsunden and use of the sauna. Thus, the lake offers both cold bathing on its own and treatments with an additional sauna session.
