Timmele combines a river landscape with archaeological and cultural heritage. If you are looking for accommodation in Timmele, the village offers a clear cultural focus: from walkable sunken lanes and an adjacent burial ground to a model of the church village and a museum featuring motorized objects. These varied themes give you several concrete ways to discover the character of the place.

Sunken lanes along the Ätran

The Timmele hålvägar are located in a scenic area along the Ätran, just north of Timmele kyrka, and can be explored on foot. They consist of four parallel sunken lanes, up to 180 metres long, 10 metres wide and 4.5 metres deep. These measurements capture different aspects of the site: the length describes its extent, while the width and depth convey the scale of the cuttings. Their parallel arrangement is also part of the picture: instead of a single track, there are four sunken lanes side by side. Walking along them, you can take in both their shape in the terrain and the layout of the lanes.

The location along the Ätran is also part of the historical context. The sunken lanes were once connected to an old ford across the Ätran. This former connection adds a history of the lanes and their relationship to the river to your walk. The landscape setting and archaeological form are as much part of the experience as the historical link to the ford.

Burial ground and ecclesiastical heritage

Right beside the Timmele hålvägar is a burial ground with 45 burial mounds and 15 circular stone settings. Alongside the lanes, this site contains two clearly distinct types of archaeological evidence. The numbers give a sense of the scale of the burial ground: 45 burial mounds alongside 15 circular stone settings. If you are interested in archaeological landscapes, you can take in the juxtaposition of the sunken lanes and burial ground here, rather than viewing the lanes as an isolated feature.

Another cultural highlight is Timmele kyrka, which houses a communion chalice dating from 1383. The ecclesiastical heritage thus complements the archaeological evidence with a different perspective on Timmele’s history.

Models and motoring history

Timmele Miniby is an outdoor miniature model of the church village, built to a scale of 1:10. It shows what the houses and buildings in the area may have looked like in the late 19th century. While the sunken lanes and burial ground draw attention to archaeological features, the Miniby focuses on the appearance of the church village at that time.

UlricehamnsBygdens MotorMuseum offers a different focus. It displays cars, motorcycles, mopeds and other motorized objects from eight decades. Unlike the Miniby, which focuses on buildings and the village landscape, the museum features various types of motorized objects. The two themes are therefore easy to distinguish: the model conveys a possible view of the church village in the late 19th century, while the museum presents its collection across eight decades and several types of vehicles.
