Styrsö combines varied coastal nature with rocks, marked trails, bathing spots and traces of historical settlements. This allows you to tailor your stay to different interests: you can explore the landscape on foot, swim by the water, enjoy good fishing opportunities year-round or learn about the history of the archipelago through specific locations.

High Point and Trails through the Coastal Landscape

A prominent landmark is Stora Rös. The rocky point lies 60 metres above sea level, making it the highest point in the archipelago. In good visibility, the view from there extends across three landscapes in western Sweden. Stora Rös is also a Bronze Age burial mound, combining a landscape experience with early island history in one place.

A map of Styrsö shows nature trails as well as marked paths for walking and jogging. Other nature trails lead to Brännholmsviken and Styrsö Skäret. Cleared paths also lead through the outer islands to Brännholmsviken and the so-called “Vikingakyrkogården”. The first church in the archipelago stood there; however, the site does not date from the Viking Age.

Bathing Spots in Bratten and Uttervik

Styrsö Uttervik offers a small cove for younger children as well as a bathing island with a deck area and bathing ladders. The cove and the structural elements of the bathing area are therefore clearly distinct from each other. Styrsö Uttervik is 1.2 kilometres from the Styrsö Tången stop.

Styrsö Bratten offers bathing opportunities on the beach and at a bathing jetty about 300 metres from the ferry landing. In the second half of the 19th century, the site developed into a seaside resort with bathing houses, a restaurant, a hotel and summer houses. This historical character is part of the site's history and does not automatically describe current services.

Fishing Village, Boatyards and Art

Tången is a traditional fishing village with the densely packed development typical of the archipelago. Well-preserved boatyards remain visible traces of the area's historical maritime heyday in Halsvik. Byn is the oldest settlement on Styrsö and was formerly the historical centre of the island.

The Öbergska House is also an integral part of the island's history: it dates from 1812. The Öbergska Gallery is located on the second floor of this house on Styrsö. Another cultural option is the Styrsö Art Tour, which has taken place annually since 2008. Local artists from Styrsö and Donsö exhibit their works there.

Styrsö kyrka is the closest church to the Styrsö Bratten stop. This specific connection to the stop can help with locating the church spatially, without assuming additional distances or travel times.

Getting There and Nautical Orientation

Styrsö is served year-round by Styrsöbolaget's public passenger boats. The full Stenpiren–Styrsö–Donsö–Vrångö boat route takes approximately 1 hour and 35 minutes. For nautical orientation, the coastal fairway in the southern archipelago is entered from the south on a course of 012° via the Matskär–Stora Rös leading line on the island of Styrsö when visibility is good.
