Gothenburg between the archipelago, hiking trails and culture

Gothenburg combines coast, islands, expansive natural areas and a diverse cultural offering. When planning your trip, the city can therefore be considered particularly well according to whether you would like to focus on hiking trails, nature experiences, maritime excursions, museums or seasonal attractions.

Natural areas between the coast and the archipelago

Gothenburg has diverse natural areas with coast, forests, mountains, lakes, valleys and agricultural landscapes. There are a total of 17 nature reserves, which serve the long-term protection of valuable nature and places for outdoor recreation. The landscape therefore extends well beyond the coast and also includes protected areas inland.

In the Gothenburg archipelago, just a short journey from the centre of Gothenburg, you will find beaches, nature reserves and walking paths. The activities on offer include seal safaris, fishing trips, swimming opportunities and boat excursions. The southern islands of the Gothenburg archipelago can be reached via the Saltholmen or Stenpiren ferry terminals. This allows you to combine a stay in the city with different island and nature experiences without limiting your trip to a single type of landscape.

Hiking trails with different focuses

For longer tours, the Gotaleden is a notable option: the hiking trail is 99 kilometres long and connects Gothenburg with Alingsås. The first stage begins in the centre of Gothenburg and leads through the Delsjön nature reserve. Another long-distance trail is the historic Pilgrimsleden Göta Älv, a 120-kilometre pilgrimage route along the Göta älv river.

The Bohusleden is also one of the best-known hiking trails in the Gothenburg area. It covers a larger area across several municipalities. The Signaturled Göteborg consists of six selected stages of the southern part of the Bohusleden and runs on the outskirts of Gothenburg. The Botaniska app is also available for walks through the Gothenburg Botanical Garden, allowing you to take self-guided tours through the garden.

Museums, design and historic places

The Gothenburg City Museum is located in Ostindiska huset, a building dating from the 1750s. The collection at the Gothenburg Museum of Art spans from the 15th century to the present day, with a focus on Nordic art. The collection is presented through museum displays, temporary exhibitions and educational programmes.

The Röhsska Museum opened in 1916 and is Sweden's only specialist museum for design and crafts. Historical and contemporary design, as well as crafts, are presented there in temporary and permanent exhibitions. Guided tours, lectures and creative workshops complement the museum's programme. Kulturnatta has been held in Gothenburg as a recurring cultural event for more than 30 years.

More experiences for different travel days

The rainforest at Universeum is an educational venue featuring species involved in conservation programmes. At the Gothenburg Rosarium, the species roses are maintained and renewed by the Gothenburg local branch of the Swedish Rose Society. Liseberg amusement park is open during three seasons: summer, Halloween and Christmas.
