Gothenburg between nature, culture and the archipelago

Delsjöområdet lies in eastern Gothenburg and is a recreational area covering approximately 1,370 hectares. The area’s lakes and ponds are home to a diverse bird population.

Nature and Landscape

Rya skog features lush deciduous trees, winding paths and open clearings suitable for picnics. The nature reserve also contains historic remnants of a fortification wall dating from the 17th century.

Gothenburg Botanical Garden is home to 20,000 plant species from more than 130 countries. Its associated arboretum covers 55 hectares.

Slottsskogen offers a diverse range of plants and wildlife, large meadows for picnics and numerous walking paths. Slottsskogens djurpark is open year-round and admission is free; it focuses on tame and wild Nordic animals. At Barnens zoo, visitors can see Swedish domestic animals in an enclosure, while children can ride Gotland ponies.

Välen Nature Reserve includes grazed coastal meadows, marine soft-bottom habitats and deciduous woodland. It has walking and cycling paths, rest areas and barbecue spots, as well as a birdwatching tower. Vättlefjäll is a recreational area near Gothenburg characterized by coniferous forests and lakes, with several hiking trails. Several lakes in Vättlefjäll are used for swimming, paddling and fishing; Vättlefjällsleden is a circular hiking trail approximately 25 kilometres long.

Culture and History

The collection at Göteborgs konstmuseum spans art from the 15th century to the present day, with a focus on Nordic art. The exhibition “Göteborgs födelse” offers insights into everyday life in the 17th century and the city’s rise to become a leading trading metropolis.

Trädgårdsföreningen is one of the best-preserved 19th-century parks in Europe. In summer, Göteborgs Rosarium is filled with several thousand colourful, fragrant roses. Palmhuset is an elegant greenhouse dating from 1878, featuring palms and other tropical plants. Japandalen offers a tranquil garden setting with a restrained, Zen-inspired design.

At Röhsska museet, the permanent exhibition “Inspiration Östasien” explores the encounter between Nordic and East Asian crafts and also includes contemporary design. The permanent exhibition “Designhistorier” presents more than 500 objects from the museum collection and covers design from the late 19th century to the present day.

Museums and Experiences

Aeroseum presents exhibitions focusing primarily on Cold War subjects as well as other areas of aviation. The simulator hall contains several flight simulators for aeroplanes and helicopters.

Sjöfartsmuseet Akvariet has Europe’s largest collection of living corals as well as a public marine research laboratory. It offers lectures on seafaring and the environment, along with creative workshops on marine themes.

Liseberg combines rides and other attractions, games, music stages, a dance floor, as well as several restaurants and food and beverage options in a green park setting.

Archipelago

The southern islands of the Gothenburg archipelago are car-free and accessible year-round by Styrsöbolaget boats. Ferries from Saltholmen generally run once an hour to the larger islands of the southern archipelago.
