Götene: Vänern, Kinnekulle and history

The municipality of Götene has a five-mile stretch of shoreline on Lake Vänern, whose coastal areas are largely untouched by development; nature experiences are available both on the water and on land.

The direct selection of places also includes Lundsbrunn, Hällekis, Götene and Källby.

Nature

Kinnekulle is considered one of the few places in Sweden where an unusually large number of different types of nature occur together.

Culture

In the vicinity of Götene, the Forshem Stone Museum preserves funerary art from seven centuries. The exhibits include stone crosses, cross-staff slabs, portrait gravestones and lily stones made from local sandstone and limestone from Kinnekulle; the pieces date from the 11th century to the late 18th century.

The Götene Museum provides information about early Swedish history and how the municipality of Götene developed. It displays photographs from the late 19th century by Karl Johansson, who is regarded locally as the founder of Götene, and contains various objects from the old agrarian society.

The Svenstorp Art Center is a creative centre with permanent seasonal exhibitions by surrealist photographer Erik Johansson. In the vicinity of Götene, the Fullösa Stone Museum displays Romanesque stone art from the 12th century in the vestibule of Fullösa Church.

History

Around the church in Götene, the early history as a church village and the agriculturally shaped surroundings can still be experienced. Individual buildings from the old village settlement, as well as the route of the historic country road through the village, have been preserved.

The first town plan for the Götene municipal community, dating from 1920, still shapes large parts of the centre of Götene. The town centre contains numerous well-preserved buildings from the first half of the 20th century.

Götene Church has ribbed vaults and extensive 15th-century lime paintings on the walls and ceiling of the chancel. The Madonna in the north window and the altarpiece also date from the 15th century.

Helenas hus consists of two blue houses softly illuminated in the evening and a pond clad in limestone from Kinnekulle. In the vicinity of Götene, Husaby Church, with its distinctive 11th-century structure featuring three towers, is considered Sweden’s first cathedral. The church preserves medieval wall paintings, as well as furnishings and objects from the Middle Ages.

Cycling

Vänerleden is a national cycle route that runs around Lake Vänern, Sweden’s largest lake; shorter cycling excursions are also possible along the route. On Kinnekulle, there are mountain biking trails in five different lengths and difficulty levels, four of which start at Kinnekullegården. The trails include options for both beginners and experienced riders.

On Kinnekulle, cycling is permitted only on the marked Kinnekulle hiking trail and on the explicitly marked cycle paths on the summit. Götene and Kinnekullebygden offer opportunities for road cycling on country roads, mountain biking, and shorter and longer cycling tours. A 33-kilometre cycling tour in Kinnekullebygden passes nature experiences and historic sites.

Leisure and trails

Bio Göta Lejon is located in Götasalen in the basement of Centrumhuset at Torggatan 4. Films are usually shown there on Wednesdays and Sundays; there are often additional screenings at other times.

Kinnekulle Ring offers professional driving and safety training and is also a venue for motorsport events. In Götene, there is an adventure playground for children of all ages at Solbacken.

In Götene, a footpath leads from Badhusparken along the Göteneån towards Lindplanteringen and the allotment garden area, where a walking path runs.
