Munkedal between fjords, hiking trails and culture
The municipality of Munkedal has access to the sea via the Gullmarsfjord. Together with the Saltkällefjord and the Färlevfjord, the Gullmarsfjord encloses Tungenäset.
Sea and landscape
Kärnsjön lies in the Örekilsälven valley and is one of the largest and deepest lakes in Bohuslän. There are opportunities for swimming, fishing and hiking around the lake. The Örekilsälven itself is Bohuslän’s second-largest watercourse and one of the best salmon-fishing rivers in southern Sweden. Salmon fishing takes place there from April to September.
Kynnefjäll is a plateau area crossed by parallel rift valleys with waterways and elongated lakes. The Kviström nature reserve contains an easily accessible hiking area with a well-developed trail system. From there, the view extends across the Örekilsälven valley to a waterfall approximately 15 metres high.
The Strömmarna nature reserve combines various landscapes: trails lead between glacial potholes, through deciduous forests and over wooded steep slopes. Canoeing is also possible there in addition to hiking. Among other species, osprey, peregrine falcons, beavers and lynx can be observed in the area.
Hiking and cycling
The Bohusleden passes through the municipality of Munkedal in several stages and is suitable for both day hikes and multi-day hikes. Several hiking trails lead from Kasebo across Kynnefjäll; they differ in length and difficulty, and some trails connect to the Bohusleden.
The municipality designates Kynnefjäll as a cycling area. A mountain-bike trail operated by Munkedals Skid- och Cykelklubb is located at Stale in Munkedal. This means that the municipality has both longer hiking connections and a designated mountain-bike trail.
Waterways
Canoes and kayaks can be rented from May to September at Friluftsfrämjandet’s canoe centre on Lake Vassbotten near Kaserna. The Flottarleden also begins there and runs for more than 40 kilometres to Dalsland.
Culture and history
The Munkedals Hembygdsmuseum has existed since 1964. Its extensive collection tells the story of life in the Munkedal region in earlier times. Gamla Bruket, part of the paper-mill site in Munkedal, provides a historical link to the industrial past. The Munkedalsslöjd association offers courses there in crafts and bookbinding, among other subjects.
Munkedals Jernväg is a 5.6-kilometre narrow-gauge railway between Åtorp and the port of Munkedal. Heritage trains operate on the line. Another testament to the past is the Stenehed burial ground, with at least 40 prehistoric sites.
Thomas Thorild Square in Hällevadsholm was designed by the artist Lukas Arons. It commemorates Thomas Thorild’s ideas about the freedom of human beings to shape their own lives and destinies.
Torreby Castle was built in 1887 as a red-brick summer palace in the Romantic neo-Gothic style. The plans were drawn up by the architect Adolf Emil Melander; the castle was designed after English models. Today, Torreby Castle serves as a restaurant and clubhouse for the Torreby Golf Club.
