Götene lies on the plain southeast of Kinnekulle. You can get to know the town through several specific themes: the development of society in Götene, Götene Church, connections to Saint Helena, and trails through green spaces. This lets you choose between local history, cultural and outdoor interests for your trip, and see Götene as a destination from different perspectives.

Museum and local history
Götene Museum provides information about early Swedish history and the development of society in Götene. Its collections include photographs from the late 19th century, including images by Karl Johansson, other pictures documenting Götene’s development, and numerous objects from the former agrarian society. The photographs and objects offer different ways to explore the past: the pictures preserve historical views, while the objects provide insights into the former agrarian society. The museum is located on the ground floor of Centrumhuset.
Church, Helena and pilgrimage trail
Götene Church, dating from 1125, is one of Sweden’s oldest churches. It is open to visitors daily from 09:00 to 16:00 from October 1 to March 31. In front of the church, Sankta Helenas rabatt features decorations and plantings inspired by the story of Saint Helena. The Sankta Elins led pilgrimage and walking trail begins at Götene Church and passes through Ova, Varnhem and Våmb before reaching Sankta Helena Church in Skövde. The church, garden and trail each offer a distinct focus: architectural history, a design inspired by Helena, and a route with several named stops.
Art around town
The bronze sculpture “Sankta Helena till häst” stands in a park along Järnvägsgatan in Götene. It depicts Götene’s patron saint on her way to the consecration of Götene Church. Another work of art is Torsten Fridh’s monolith Pomona in the park by the basin. It is made of red Kinnekulle granite, and its symmetrical forms are made of sandstone. The two works offer different points of entry into public art: the scene depicted is central to the bronze, while Pomona draws attention to its different materials and forms.
Walks and outdoor activities
A footpath leads from Badhusparken along the Göteneån to Lindplanteringen and the allotment area, where there is a walking trail. A tree-filled green space also lies between Götene Church and the Göteneån. For a different kind of activity, Brännaskogen has a 2.5-kilometer running or exercise trail. Behind Folkets park, a 1.2-kilometer forest walk begins, with activities and information about the forest. The two distances can be compared by length and purpose: here, a walk with forest-themed activities contrasts with a running or exercise trail.
Götene also offers families a specific outdoor destination: Solbackens lekplats is an adventure playground in a park in Götene, designed for children of all ages. Those who want to explore beyond the town can visit the scenic 48-kilometer Kinnekulleleden in Götene Municipality. The route is in the inland region of western Sweden, on the southeastern shore of Lake Vänern, and is suitable for the whole family. It complements the shorter trails in town with a longer hiking option across the municipality.
