Kramfors on the High Coast

Kramfors lies on the banks of the Ångerman River. The High Coast visitor destination comprises the four municipalities of Kramfors, Örnsköldsvik, Härnösand and Sollefteå. The High Coast World Heritage Site is located in the municipalities of Kramfors and Örnsköldsvik. In 2000, the High Coast was awarded World Heritage status because of its unique geology resulting from land uplift. The relative land uplift there is 286 metres above today's sea level.

Nature

Skuleskogen National Park was opened in 1984, covers 295 hectares and is located in the municipalities of Kramfors and Örnsköldsvik. The park has almost 3.5 miles, or around 35 kilometres, of hiking trails, as well as three entrances: South, North and West. Several overnight huts and the possibility of camping are also part of the national park.

Skuleberget is 295 metres high and has been a nature reserve since 1969. Around 260 different plant species have been identified there. The summit of Skuleberget can be reached on foot from both sides. The Skuleberget cable car takes visitors to the summit in about 25 minutes, crossing the world's highest marine boundary along the way.

Skuleskogen National Park is also home to a rock crevice approximately 200 metres long. It is around 40 metres deep and approximately six metres wide, and offers a view of Tärnättvattnen and Näskefjärden.

Hiking

The High Coast Trail runs for 128 kilometres through the High Coast World Heritage area and is divided into 13 stages. Each stage offers at least one overnight accommodation option under a solid roof; their starting and ending points are accessible by car. The varying route lengths and division into stages provide two different scales for personal planning.

Valkallen is a viewpoint located 240 metres above sea level on the High Coast Trail. From there, the view stretches over the mouth of the Ångerman River, the High Coast Bridge, Hemsön and the Storön nature reserve.

Culture and History

Borgberget near Stensätter is home to one of the three northernmost hillforts in Sweden. It is considered the best-preserved fortification from the Migration Period, dated from AD 400 to 800.

The Witch Museum at Hola Folk High School in Prästmon explores the history of the witch trials and the events connected with them in the region. A total of 71 people were executed on Häxberget in connection with the witch trials of 1674; it is regarded as Sweden's largest documented mass execution in peacetime.

In Mjällom, Kulturfabriken is located in a former shoe factory. It includes a café, art and craft exhibitions, a museum section and a flea market.

The events of Ådalen 31 in Lunde began on 14 May 1931 with a peaceful demonstration from Frånö to Lunde and ended with five people killed after the military opened fire. The demonstration route between Frånö Folkets hus and Lunde Folkets hus is approximately five kilometres long and is recommended as a hiking tip. In summer, both Folkets hus venues offer information and exhibitions; Lunde is also home to a well-known sculpture by Lenny Clarhäll.

Preserved industrial environments from the sawmill and pulp industries remain on Svanö, including buildings from the late 19th century and later periods. The historic visitor sites on Svanö are connected by easy-to-walk paths. Parking is available at Svanö Folkets hus and the harbour.

The old church of Nordingrå was probably built around 1200 in the Romanesque style, with a narrower chancel. Its excavated ruin includes seven surviving grave slabs and shows various construction phases over the centuries.

Getting There

Kramfors resecentrum is the municipality's central public transport hub, bringing together train and bus services. It offers, among other things, seating, toilets and dining options. Kramfors can be reached by bus, train, boat and plane. From Kramfors, travel options are available within the municipality as well as to Örnsköldsvik, Sollefteå, Härnösand and beyond.

Food and Drink

High Coast Distillery in Bjärtrå offers guided distillery tours and tastings throughout the year. It also has a visitor centre, a café and lunch service. In Kramfors, a sweet speciality is called KRAMFORSKAKA and is also known by names such as Chokladrutor, Kärleksmums and Kokosrutor.
