Nyland – Harbor, Industrial Heritage and Hiking Trails

Nyland

Nyland lies where the Ångermanälven flows into a deep sea inlet. Its waterfront location shapes the town just as much as its industrial history and the paths leading into the surrounding landscape. During its heyday in the 19th and 20th centuries, Nyland was the most highly developed industrial community in Ådalen.

Industrial History and Maritime Traces

Along Köpmangatan, Nyland’s former main street, several typical light-colored wooden houses from Ådalen’s sawmill and railway communities have been preserved. Nyland’s former courthouse has also been preserved. At Nyland Quay stands the historic, white-painted Hamnmagasinet. Its accessibility has been improved with new doors, stairs, and secured escape routes. The building is therefore one of the visible historic landmarks at the quay, without its former function being equated with any present-day use.

The island of Lilla Norge lies just outside the harbor. It was formed from ballast sand carried by Norwegian ships and is therefore itself an unusual testament to the region’s maritime history. Nyland Quay has at least five guest berths, and no berthing fee is charged. Historical traces and facilities for visiting boaters thus meet at the waterfront.

Church, Exhibitions and Local History

Near Nyland lies Ytterlännäs Gamla kyrka, a stone church from the 13th century. Its vaults and lime paintings date from the 15th century, while its wooden interior has been fully preserved since the 18th century. The church lies between Bollstabruk and Nyland; the access road is signposted along Route 333. The church offers guided tours, a café, exhibitions, a children’s studio, and a church trail with a quiz walk. A visit therefore combines architectural history with various forms of interpretation, from a guided tour to independent exploration.

Hiking with Views over Nyland

For the Nyland hiking route, there is a parking area above the ski slope at the cross-country ski center. For the same hiking route, the bus stops at the Nylands Folkets hus bus stop on Storgatan. Antons stig begins at the parking area and is approximately 500 meters long. The detour via Antons stig to Nylandsberget offers sweeping views over Nyland and the Ångermanälven. This makes it possible to experience the town not only from the quay but also from an elevated viewpoint.

Cross-Country Skiing in the Surrounding Area

Near Nyland, there are cross-country ski tracks measuring 2.5 and 5 kilometers. The tracks begin at Nylandsberget and Slalombacken, respectively. The specific track lengths and their respective starting points distinguish the two routes; other operating or snow conditions remain unspecified.
