Mjällom: Scenic Views and Industrial History
Accommodation in Mjällom
Mjällom offers two distinct focuses for trip planning: nature experiences centered on viewpoints and hiking trails, and a long history as an industrial community. Mjällom has been an industrial community for more than 100 years. In the Norrfällsviken Nature Reserve, a viewing platform offers a view of the Bådamalen boulder field. The same nature reserve contains an archaeological site with 14 stone burial mounds, most of which date from the Bronze Age.
Views and Trails
From Högklinten, the view stretches north to Örnsköldsvik and south to Härnösand. There is a circular hiking trail at the summit, with more beautiful views and several rest areas. Högklinten Nature Reserve can be reached from a parking area via a footpath just under two kilometers long. The parking area is on the road from Nordingrå to Mjällom.
Brevikstugan offers a wide view over Omnefjärden and the open sea. The landscapes described therefore range from the views at Högklinten to the combination of fjärd and open sea at Brevikstugan. For your planning, it is worth treating each location and trail as a separate destination.
Choosing the Mjällom–Omne Route
There are two route lengths to choose from for the Mjällom–Omne section: the upper route is 16.4 kilometers long, and the lower route is 15.5 kilometers. Depending on your route choice, the section is rated from moderate to challenging. Planning your trip therefore involves considering both the specific option and an appropriate assessment of its difficulty. The lower route passes the Mjällomviken Motor Museum. Trail conditions and markings may change; check current route information before setting out.
Industrial History and Collections
In Mjällom, the Kulturfabriken exhibition is housed in Ivar E Norlin’s former shoe factory. The former factory is a reminder of the time when Mjällom was a center of shoe manufacturing in Sweden. The exhibition focuses on the history of industry, sawmills, fishing, and agriculture. Every summer, various local artists and craftspeople also display their work at Kulturfabriken Höga Kusten.
Motormuseet i Höga Kusten houses one of the largest collections in northern Sweden. It includes boats, stationary engines, hot-bulb engines, and outboard motors. One specific detail about the collection is the age of its oldest engine: it dates from 1903. The different types of engines represent different aspects of the collection, which is not limited to a single category.
The history of Mjälloms Tunnbröd also connects with the town’s working life. Sweden’s oldest flatbread bakery began in a small bakery in Mjällom. Flatbread production and shoe manufacturing provided employment there for several decades; the bakery later moved to Ullånger. Alongside the town’s industrial and museum history, this also links the origins of flatbread with Mjällom.
