Noraström offers several starting points for a trip focused on history and outdoor activities. Nora Church stands prominently on a hill in the valley; Skullerstabadet is on Norafjärden, and there are opportunities for walking and hiking around Skiringen. There are also traces of earlier milling and sawmill work. If you are looking for a hotel in Noraström, you can first decide whether church architecture and local history or swimming, trails and fishing should shape your stay.

A church spanning the Middle Ages and the 19th century

The present-day Nora Church was built from 1804 to 1806 by master builder Simon Geting from Högsjö. Only the baptismal font remains from an earlier medieval stone church. It is made of Gotland limestone and dates from the 13th century. Two clearly distinct periods are therefore central: the font recalls the medieval predecessor church, while the present building was constructed more than five centuries later. The church stands prominently on a hill in the valley in Noraström. Its position makes it a clear landmark in the valley landscape. For architecture enthusiasts, the striking contrast lies in the relationship between the present church building and the only surviving element of the older stone church.

Swimming, trails and fishing

There are various options for spending time outdoors. Skullerstabadet is in the northern part of Norafjärden in Noraström. There are opportunities for walking and hiking around Skiringen; at Skiringen, rental of a rowboat is included in the price of the fishing permit. Check this condition before your trip, as fishing permit regulations may change. The swimming area, hiking area and fishing permit offer different ways to spend your time: a day swimming, a walk or time fishing with a rowboat. Deciding which of these activities matters most can help you plan your trip and find accommodation suited to your interests.

The history of milling and sawmilling

Local industrial history is also connected with water. Noraströms kvarn in Rossvik was powered by water and stood on the Rossvik side of Holsströmmen, which flows between Hol and Rossvik. The last milling took place at the mill in 1964; the building was demolished in the late 1960s.

Noraströms sågverk is another chapter in the history of industry. It was sheltered in a bay on Norafjärden and had a good harbour. The site had a brick-built charcoal kiln, where charcoal was produced for export. A description from 2003 records this kiln at the sawmill site. This distinguishes the sågverk from the water-powered kvarn: the focus here is on the sheltered harbour location and charcoal production, while the latter is associated with the mill and Holsströmmen.
