Torna-Hällestad: Nature, Trails and Village History

Torna Hällestad lies approximately 15 km southeast of Lund on the northeastern slope of Romeleåsen, at the transition to the Vombsänkan basin. As a result, this natural area differs in character from an ordinary woodland or agricultural landscape, without requiring you to commit to a particular route.

Near Torna Hällestad, the Skåneleden connects with other sections of the trail. Here it runs across a network of eskers covered by pastures and beech forest. This combination of open areas and beech forest shapes the course of the landscape. Church, Runestones and Village Stone

You will also find distinctive historical points of interest in the village centre. Hällestad Church in Torna Hällestad was originally built in the 12th century from grey stone, with a nave and a square chancel. Eight vault sections in the nave contain medieval lime paintings depicting the Passion story. Their work is dated to 1460.

Hällestad Church also has three runestones built into the eastern section of the church wall. Near the church, Stämmestenen, the old village stone, is also preserved in a central location in the village. Thus, sacred architectural history, medieval pictorial art and a traditional local stone are brought together in a clearly identifiable part of the village, without requiring you to search through different thematic areas.

Cycling on Trails with a History

Next to the Tornavallen football pitch is a pump track that welcomes all cyclists. For a longer route, the Torna Hällestadsspåret is available. It is a combined cycling and walking trail as well as a riding trail. The route follows a former railway embankment, where trains and rail buses once travelled between Dalby and Torna Hällestad. The embankment’s former use is therefore part of the trail’s history, while its current designation describes its shared use by cyclists, walkers and riders.
