Lund: historic urban culture and green paths

Section 103 of the Cykelleden Skåne begins at the white beaches of Lomma; after about 10 kilometres of easy cycling eastwards, you reach Lund with its atmospheric city centre, cathedral, museums and shops. In the Middle Ages, the city was a Nordic cultural centre. Today, a 12th-century cathedral, museums with different areas of focus and Kunskapsparken come together here.

Cathedral and museums for exploring cultural history

Lund Cathedral dates from the 12th century. Inside, there is an astronomical clock. The cathedral offers free guided tours to private visitors. This places a historic building alongside a concrete insight into its interior and a documented guided-tour offering.

Historiska museet is Skåne’s largest museum of archaeological finds, coins and ecclesiastical art. Its origins date back to the 18th century. Compared with the cathedral, the focus here is on collections and objects from regional cultural history. Guided tours of the exhibitions take place at 13:00 and 15:00.

Kulturen in Lund is a cultural history museum with historic houses from different periods. Kulturen’s open-air museum comprises six historic residential buildings with reconstructed interiors from different periods and social classes, from the 18th century to the 1930s. Guided tours of the exhibitions or the historic houses in the open-air museum are included in the admission price. Here, the focus is on houses, interiors and the temporal and social contexts represented in them.

The Skissernas Museum offers a different approach to art history. It has the world’s largest collection of sketches, models and designs for Swedish and international public art. The collection focuses on the working materials and forms of creation behind public art, not only on finished works. Swedish and international art are represented equally.

Kunskapsparken and spatial orientation

Lund Cathedral and Kulturen are located immediately next to or behind Lundagård Park. As a result, two different cultural sites form part of the spatial surroundings of this park.

For movement between the cultural sites, Kunskapsparken provides its own orientation. More than 3,000 trees and almost 400 different plant species grow there. The park has paved paths for pedestrians and cyclists; together, they form a loop of about 2.5 kilometres. The MAX IV tram stop is located near the entrance to Kunskapsparken from Utmarksvägen.
