Nature, Water and Trails

Fågelsångsdalen Nature Reserve is located in Södra Sandby. Its gorge-like valley includes flowing water, pastureland and herb-rich deciduous forests. A hiking trail runs east to west through the valley, following a babbling brook. If you enjoy following a watercourse while hiking, this route offers a clear point of reference; the valley, pastureland and deciduous forest complete the landscape.

The Våtmarken Södra Sandby wetland is about a 15-minute walk from the bus station in Södra Sandby. Paths and gathering places have been created there for recreation. In winter, the ponds can offer a good surface for ice skating. Ice skating is therefore a seasonal option, while the paths and gathering places were created for recreation.

Sofielundsparken offers a different kind of green space from the valley or wetland: it is the largest park in Södra Sandby and forms an important green corridor north of the centre along Sularpsbäcken. Those interested in green spaces within the town will find a distinct focus here.

The former route of the Lund–Harlösa railway line is now used as a walking and cycling path. Hardebergaspåret is a remnant of the former Lund–Harlösa railway line. The combination of its current use as a path and its railway past makes Hardebergaspåret relevant both for cycling and walking and for local history.

Kungsmarken Nature Reserve, in the area around Södra Sandby, can be reached by bicycle via Hardebergaspåret. A red-marked hiking loop of about 3 km runs through open, rolling countryside. The reserve also has orchid-rich meadows, grasslands rich in butterflies, and ancient Iron Age graves and hillforts. This gives you several useful points of reference for planning: access by bicycle and a hiking loop of approximate length.

Local History and Archaeological Finds

The older parts of Södra Sandby include several small-scale industrial settings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These include former sites of a dairy, distillery, bakery, brewery and machinery business. One specific name from this history is Sandbymaskiner: the mechanical engineering company operated in the central Kryptan district and was previously called Martin Jönssons mekaniska verkstad.

The church and some older buildings mark the location of the medieval village site. Postholes found near the present-day vicarage suggest that a Viking Age hall complex may have stood in Södra Sandby. The hall complex remains a possible interpretation of the finds, not a confirmed statement that it existed.

The Sandby hoard consists of Arabic, English, German and Scandinavian coins minted between 867 and 985. The Scandinavian coins are uncirculated and come directly from the mint at Hedeby in southern Jutland. The hoard was buried sometime around the year 1000 or shortly before, in the garden of the present-day vicarage. The minting period and the burial date refer to different points in time: the coins are older than the burial of the hoard.
