Westerholz: Hotels and accommodations
Westerholz has a small beach area with a bathing jetty and bistro. There is also a bathing beach near Westerholz on the southern shore of the Flensburg Fjord, with sand and gravel, a nearby campsite, and seasonal lifeguard supervision by the DLRG.
Coast and paths
A paved coastal path connects Westerholz with Langballigau over approximately 1.2 kilometers. The Fördesteig is a 95-kilometer coastal path between the Danish border and the Schlei. It continues the Danish Gendarme Path and runs through Langballigau. Westerholz also has the “Strandgut” snack bar.
Landscape
The Angeln landscape around the Flensburg Fjord is characterized by gently rolling hills and combines small forests, pastures, and grain fields.
Nature
The Langballigau Valley is a 124-hectare nature reserve established in 1990. It includes semi-natural hillside forests, wet habitats, and a winding stream. Endangered species of dragonflies, grasshoppers, butterflies, and amphibians occur there; grass snakes are also occasionally seen. Approximately 50 bird species can be observed in the valley.
History
On the historic walking trails in Westerholz, information boards explain local sites and buildings. Traces of Viking-age settlement have been preserved in the wider regional area. Agricultural and livestock-raising conditions contributed to the rural settlement structure there.
