Schleswig-Flensburg stretches from the Danish border and the Flensburg Fjord via Gelting Bay and along the Schlei to the Eider in the inland area. The district includes Baltic Sea and fjord coasts totaling 43 kilometers, as well as inland villages, clear lakes, beech forests, meadows and hidden moors.

Nature and Trails

Cycling and hiking trails have been developed throughout the district. Beaches, settlements and sights can be reached by private transport, public transport, bicycle and waterways.

The Hechtmoor in Havetoftloit was used for peat extraction for centuries and has been a nature reserve since 1941. Mittelangeln is also part of the Schleswig-Flensburg district and lies between the Flensburg Fjord and the Schlei.

Three local tourism organizations provide route descriptions, event calendars and current brochures for the district.

Culture and History

Schleswig is the district capital of Schleswig-Flensburg. Historic buildings in Schleswig reflect the city’s former regional importance.

The Edelsturm ruins and Gottorf Castle, the State Museum, are located in the area surrounding Schleswig-Flensburg. In the wider regional area are the rune stone, Habernis Beach and Lindholm. Ruethstein, Tolkschau and Nordhöhe are also located in the surrounding area.
