Groß Rheide is closely connected to the Eider-Treene-Sorge cycle route network. The route begins in Dörpstedt, 6 km away, and leads through the lowland landscape of Schleswig-Holstein.

The Ochsenweg runs along Groß Rheide. As a historic route, it is associated with journeys between Denmark and northern Germany and offers impressions of the region’s natural environment and cultural history.

The Viking-Frisian Way also passes through Groß Rheide. It connects St. Peter-Ording with Maasholm and showcases historical evidence of Viking and Frisian life.

History and Monuments

The prehistoric Groß Rheide No. 1 burial mound is located on the eastern municipal boundary. The protected cultural monuments on Dorfstraße also include Monument 1848 and Haus Mees.

The Runestone, Gottorf Castle, the State Museum, Haithabu, St. John’s Monastery and Mövenberg are located in the vicinity of Groß Rheide. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Haithabu and the Danevirke is near Groß Rheide and can be reached via the Thorshammerweg.

Waters and the Regional Surroundings

The Rheider Au, a tributary of the Treene, flows through the northern part of Groß Rheide. The Treene lies west of the municipal area. Selker Noor, which is indirectly connected to the Schlei, lies northeast of the municipal area.
