Schierensee: Hotels and Accommodation
Schierensee is located in Westensee Nature Park. The landscape is shaped by the Großer Schierensee and Kleiner Schierensee lakes, bringing together two distinctive bodies of water.
Nature
Nearby, the Lower Schierensee stream connects Kleiner Schierensee with the lower-lying Westensee. More than 500 invertebrate species have been recorded in the Lower Schierensee stream, including the rare freshwater pearl mussel and mayflies, which depend on oxygen-rich, clean waters.
The Ahrensee and Northeastern Westensee Nature Reserve protects a representative, largely intact complex of lakes and flowing waters in the young moraine landscape of Schleswig-Holstein. The nature park hiking trail is also part of the region's network of paths and runs for around 35 kilometres through Westensee Nature Park.
Schierensee has hiking trails and a bathing area at Am Heidberg 1a. The suggested routes include the village loop at 1.5 kilometres, the lake loop at 5.4 kilometres, the large lake loop at 8.4 kilometres, the estate loop at 2.5 kilometres, and the route via Marienberg at 3.5 kilometres. The local hiking trails are not marked.
Westensee Nature Park has 17 circular hiking trails. Trails 4, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 17 can be loaded onto a navigation device or into a navigation app on a smartphone. The bathing area at Großer Schierensee is also visited by people from outside Schierensee.
History
Caspar von Saldern commissioned the manor house at Schierensee Estate and died there in 1786. The manor house was expanded between 1776 and 1782, adding Baroque and neoclassical decorative elements as well as a landscape garden. The village of Schierensee was sold to Bordesholm Monastery in 1470.
The manor house at Schierensee Estate can be visited by prior arrangement with the estate administration.
The Café am See 17 is located at the bathing area in Schierensee. Cakes, gateaux, burgers and chips are freshly prepared there, with an emphasis also placed on using organic and regional products.
Hof Sophienlust has a self-service farm shop. The farm and the Kiel Waldorf School offer vegetables, eggs, dairy products, sausages, beef, pork and chicken, as well as fresh organic baked goods. The Hertz-Kleptow family farm offers juice, eggs and a selection of frozen or vacuum-packed organic lamb or chicken.
Schierensee is served by DB Regio Bus Nord routes 794, 795 and 796.
