Osterby: Hotels and Accommodations

Osterby stretches along the Osterbek through a hilly landscape shaped by the ground moraine relief of the last Ice Age. The Osterbek tunnel valley is associated with the glacial tunnel valley landscape of the Hüttener Berge, which was formed by meltwater beneath the ice.

Landscape

Hiking Route 2 crosses the hedgerow and sunken-lane landscape of the Hüttener Berge. Around Osterby, the landscape is described as rather flat and featuring many riding stables.

Paths through the Surrounding Area

The Osterby–Kochendorf route is a circular hiking route and is described as suitable for a short walk. Some sections are also suitable for cyclists. It starts in the center of Osterby at the Schinkenkrog restaurant, leads across meadows and fields, and then through a wooded area. Next to the bridge over the Osterbek, there is a shelter that can be used as a rest stop.

Archaeology and History

Osterby has an archaeological connection through the discovery of the head of a bog body in the Köhlmoor. The hairstyle of this head is known as the Suebian knot and is described as the first original example of this style, which was previously known only from written reports.

Three Bronze Age graves near Osterby have been preserved as clearly visible mounds in a field. The Osterwall is a four-kilometer section of the Danewerk defensive wall. The Osterwall and the Viking settlement of Haithabu were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018.
