Melsdorf: Hotels and Accommodation

Melsdorf preserves its village traditions. In Westensee Nature Park, a landscape of hills, valleys, meadows, forests, lakes and wetlands stretches across 250 square kilometres.

Nature and Trails

Westensee Nature Park offers marked hiking trails, longer and shorter circular routes, as well as routes suitable for families. There are four themed cycling routes; the park is also connected to the Kiel Canal Route and the Ochsenweg.

At 88.3 metres high, Tüteberg offers views across Lake Westensee towards Kiel. The nature park's hiking and cycling trails pass natural and cultural highlights, including Lake Flemhude, Strohbrück Lock, Emkendorf Manor and Arche Warder Zoo.

Culture and History

Historically, Melsdorf belonged to Quarnbek Manor and the Flemhude parish. The volunteer fire brigade maintains village traditions: the maypole is erected on 1 May, and a lantern festival takes place in autumn.

The Melsdorf Bürgerhaus serves as the local cultural centre. Cultural events are held there, attracting people from beyond Melsdorf.

The manor houses in Schierensee, Deutsch-Nienhof and Emkendorf are notable buildings with landscaped parks. Westensee Nature Park is also home to medieval fieldstone churches in Westensee and Flemhude. Historic burial sites, including megalithic tombs and burial mounds, can also be found there.

Getting to Melsdorf

Melsdorf railway station was reopened in 2015. Trains to Kiel and Rendsburg run hourly. Bus routes 91 and 14/15 connect Melsdorf with Kiel; they run every 30 minutes from the stops at the village square and the railway station.

Melsdorf railway station is freely accessible and has step-free access and bicycle parking.
