Borkowo's documented history dates back to around 1200. In 1274, Duke Mestwin gave the place to the Cistercians from Pelplin. Borkowo is located in Tczew County; Bòrkòwò and Borkau are recorded as historical forms.

History and Religious Heritage

The Cistercians built a chapel in Borkowo dedicated to Saint James. In 1802, an apparition of the Virgin Mary at a roadside shrine in Borkowo was reported; the statue was subsequently carried in a procession to the church in nearby Nowa Cerkiew.

Geographical Location

Borkowo is located on DK 234, approximately 13 km west of Gniew. Gniew – Teutonic Castle, 13th century, and Skórcz, Parish of All Saints, are located in the vicinity of Borkowo. In the wider regional area are the Town Hall, Adam Mickiewicz, City Park, and Działki.
