Tolne between nature park, hiking trails and historic sites

In Tolne, the natural landscape, trails and historic sites shape travel planning. Tolne Nature Park covers 2,440 hectares, while Tolne Skov covers an area of 715 hectares and lies in a hilly landscape.

Nature Park and Forest Landscape

Tolne Nature Park is located in a hilly Ice Age landscape. Ancient deciduous forests and open natural areas create a mosaic landscape that is home to numerous rare plants and insects. The Tolne Bakker Natura 2000 site is part of the nature park. From Tolne Nature Park, there is a view of Skagens Odde. Tolne Skov was designated a protected area in 2000, affecting the northernmost part of the forest.

Hiking and Cycling in Tolne

There are several marked hiking trails in Tolne Skov. One of them is the marked Tolne Skov hiking route, Red Route, which is 1.3 kilometres long. The also-marked Tolne Nature Park Route runs through the entire Tolne Nature Park, from Katsig Bakker in the south to Eskær Skov in the north. A length of 12.6 to 23.3 kilometres is given for this route. It can be started near Tolne Skovpavillon, where parking is also available. At Tolne Skovpavillon, you can pass under the railway line into the part of the forest located south of the line. The different route lengths provide clear guidance when choosing between a shorter loop and a longer tour.

The Tolneruten also runs through hilly terrain in Tolne Nature Park. Along the way, paved roads alternate with gravel roads, dirt tracks and small paths.

Church, Burial Monument and Railway History

Tolne Kirkeby is the original settlement, with a Romanesque church from the 13th century, and lies about two kilometres south of the railway village of Tolne. Tolne Church was built from medieval bricks that may have been produced in the surrounding area. After contacting the sexton, Jørgen Kristensen, by telephone on 98 93 03 87, the church can be visited inside.

Stenhøj, a protected Stone Age burial monument from the Neolithic period, lies 400 metres north of Tolne Church. The monument is approximately 28 metres long, 8 metres wide and 1 metre high, and is surrounded by 19 large boundary stones. The old village of Tolne developed significantly into a railway town after the railway line between Hjørring and Frederikshavn was built in 1871.

Tolne Skovpavillon

Tolne Skovpavillon was built in 1907 on the initiative of the estate owner Jørgen Larsen of Gaardbogaard and the landowner Jens Saxager. From its inauguration in 1908, the pavilion was leased as a refreshment venue and was later also used as a dance hall. A pond and a network of paths were created below the pavilion. Today, the Tolne Skovpavillon association owns the pavilion and rents out the main building and the barn for private celebrations.
