Hulsig between beach, heathland and cycle path

Hulsig Beach is a quiet, sheltered beach on the east coast. The beach is located near the protected Hulsig Hede area. Here, the coast and heathland lie close together, while the Hulsigstien provides a connection between Skagen and Hulsig. This makes different local areas the focus for walks, bike rides and peaceful days in nature.

Beach and protected heathland

Hulsig Hede is protected and designated as an international nature reserve. The area comprises white and grey dunes, heathland, marshy areas, bog, scrub, woodland and scattered wetlands. Through conservation measures, the heathland was restored as an open dune and heath landscape with small stands of deciduous trees. The wetlands and marshy areas form a clearly different part of the landscape from the white and grey dunes. Scrub and woodland complement the open areas with vegetated sections; the heathland therefore extends from dry dunes to wet areas. Those who want to observe nature beyond the water will therefore find a variety of landscapes in the heathland for walks and bike rides.

Paths and getting around locally

A walk around the local lake begins at Karredvej by Hulsig Beach. There are only a few parking spaces at the end of Karredvej by Hulsig Beach; arriving by bicycle or on foot is recommended. The circuit around the lake therefore has a clear starting point, and the limited parking is an integral part of planning this walk. For a day outdoors, the lakeside path and traveling by bicycle or on foot can therefore be taken into account together. The choice between cycling and walking here concerns not only how you get around, but also how you deal with the limited parking space.

The Hulsigstien is a paved cycle path between Skagen and Hulsig. Wheelchair users can use the Hulsigstien. In addition, access mats were laid at the entrance to Hulsig Beach in 2021, enabling people with reduced mobility as well as those with strollers, walking frames or wheelchairs to reach the beach more safely and easily. The paved connection between Skagen and Hulsig and the access with mats at Hulsig Beach represent different path situations. On the Hulsigstien, the focus is on traveling between the two places; at Hulsig Beach, it is on access to the coast.

Hulsig Church and spiritual life

Hulsig Church was built in 1893–1894 with influences from Romanesque church architecture. It is made of red brick and designed in the neo-Romanesque style typical of the period. The interior likewise follows a simple formal language: the walls are whitewashed and the wooden ceiling is painted pale yellow. The red bricks define the exterior, while the whitewashed walls and pale yellow wooden ceiling determine the interior's color scheme. Those interested in culture can observe the building period, style and interior design in a single building here.
