Jerup: Beach, Nature and Cycling Route

Jerup offers several specific starting points for planning your trip: beach landscapes, distinctive natural features, active routes and local history are available as different aspects of your stay.

Beach and simple picnic areas

Jerup Beach consists of a shallow sandy beach, a single row of dunes, a beach marsh meadow and grazed meadows. If you would like to combine your stay with a simple outdoor break, Jerup Beach has a shelter site with two small shelters right on the beach. Jerup Shelter also has a toilet, water and a fire pit; a few small tents can be pitched there as well.

Nature between rimmer and wetlands

Kalmar Rimmer is a 10-hectare natural area in the vicinity of Jerup. Its characteristic features are the pronounced alternation between rimmer and dobber. The differences in elevation are 3–6 m, while the distance between the rimmer is 10–20 m. Jerup Enge also offers a particular focus for nature observation: the area is a resting site for several duck species, including wigeon, teal and mallard.

Explore Jerup by bike and on foot

Grøn Tur is a 60-kilometre cycling route. As part of this route, Jerup offers the option of reaching the route by train or returning from it by train. This makes it possible to combine route planning flexibly with a stay in Jerup, without requiring travel in a particular direction. The 60 kilometres provide a specific framework for planning the day; the route can be divided into several sections during your stay. The train option can be used either to reach the start of the route or for the return journey. For hikers, the Ålbæk–Sæby section of the North Sea Trail runs from Ålbæk Dune Plantation through Jerup Heath and Ålbæk Bog to Kalmar Rimmer.

The Strandhof settlement and Jerup Church

The original Strandhof settlement in Jerup can be traced back to around 1550 and can still be experienced along Fredborgvej towards the beach. Jerup Church is another cultural point of interest. It was built in 1888–1889 and is a branch church of Elling. It was designed by the architect F. Uldall; the building consists of red brick and follows an adapted Romanesque style. At Jerup Church, the construction period, F. Uldall’s design, the red brick and the adapted Romanesque style come together in a single building. This means that during your stay, in addition to the beach and nature, you can also take into account the development of the town and its ecclesiastical architecture.

Practical information for getting around

The small cemetery at Jerup Church is accessible from the car park east of the church and is surrounded by a hedge.
