Strandby: Baltic Sea beach, harbour and historic trails

Strandby begins at the water: Strandby Nordstrand is an east-facing bathing beach and is designated as a bathing spot. North and south of Strandby are white, family-friendly beaches with sand dunes. The beach on the northern harbour shore of Strandby has Blue Flag status. On the way from Nørrevej, Strandby beach has toilets and a long ramp providing access for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Beach, reef and harbour

Seasonal sea trout fishing is possible at the reef north of Strandby Nord. From the shore of Strandby harbour, you can cast into deeper water without a boat and fish for, among other species, cod, saithe, sea trout, mackerel, herring, plaice and garfish.

Nature and birdwatching

At Strandby Nord, the Natura 2000 area begins 200 metres north of the beach. The route through Bannerslund Skov includes a birdwatching tower with views of Hirsholmene and the area's diverse birdlife. There is another observation tower at Strandby Marina, with binoculars and views of Hirsholmene and Læsø.

Strandby-stien and old town

Strandby-stien is approximately 7 km long and can be started at the car park near the “Hundeskoven” in Bannerslund, at the railway station or at the harbour. Along Strandby-stien, information boards tell stories from Strandby. The trail passes the site near the Elling Å where ships from the Iron Age were found. Strandby-stien also features information about the “Strandbyskatten”, a treasure found in 2012 by two young men, containing coins and other objects from the Viking Age. Strandby's old town can be explored on a tour through the historic district.

Harbour and fishing history

Strandby harbour was inaugurated in 1896. From the 1920s to the 1950s, numerous cutters from Strandby fished in the North Sea and landed their catch in Grimsby and Hull on England's east coast. Strandby Fiskeauktion is one of the few remaining fish auctions on the east coast and offers visitors many different species of fish and shellfish to see.

At Strandby harbour, fresh fish and shellfish are sold directly from the fishing boats, in the fish houses or at the auction held every morning at 7:00 a.m. The harbour, fishing and auction thus form a tangible maritime aspect of the town.

Marina and railway station

Train and bus connections can be reached from Strandby Marina within five minutes. Strandby Station is a small, unstaffed halt with bicycle parking and easy access to the platforms.
