Spøttrup between Beach, Forest and Coastal Paths
Coast, Beach and Nature
Whether you choose a coastal path or want to move between beach and nature, Spøttrup offers several clearly distinct landscape impressions. Spøttrup Beach is a small, conveniently located bathing beach. At Spøttrup Beach, an oak grove extends to the edge of the beach, while the beach marsh contains sea pinks. Those who pay attention not only to bathing but also to vegetation and landscape details along the coast will find a manageable, varied section of coastline here. At Spøttrup Beach, beach, oak grove and beach marsh therefore stand alongside one another as distinct landscape elements.
Paths by the Water
The Kyststien along the coast from the harbour to Egmont Højskolen has a firm surface and is suitable for wheelchair users. For a walk with a different route, you can also include the Kyststien ved Hou: it crosses the Spøttrup Bæk. From Hov Harbour, an 800-metre-long path leads along the beach to the protected area near Spøttrup Beach. The three sections address different path conditions: a firm surface on the Kyststien, the crossing of the Spøttrup Bæk and the route close to the beach from Hov Harbour. An 800-metre-long path can be planned as a clearly defined stretch during a walk along this section of beach.
The Spøttrup Bæk flows into the sea at the beach and has a clearly defined estuary there between two groynes. The mouth of the Spøttrup Bæk does not affect the bathing water quality at the beach. In Odder Municipality, all bathing beaches have received the highest bathing water rating of three stars. At the beach, the stream mouth, groynes and bathing shore therefore meet directly. Those who pay attention to both water formations and bathing water quality at the beach will find different facets of the coastal area in Spøttrup.
Getting Your Bearings at Spøttrup Beach
Opposite Hou Maritime Efterskole, there are parking spaces and a path to Spøttrup Beach. A path through a small wooded area leads to a beach with a bathing jetty. This makes it possible to experience access to the beach as a transition from the forest to the coast. Those who choose the path through the wooded area and are looking for a bathing jetty as their destination will find this combination at Spøttrup Beach.
Hou Tjørnen and the Maritime Surroundings
The Hou area and its surroundings, which also include Spøttrup, comprise forests, a beach, a marina and a commercial harbour with ferry connections to Samsø and Tunø. Depending on your interests, nature, the bathing shore, harbour life or the ferry connections to Samsø and Tunø may therefore take centre stage.
You can visit Hou Tjørnen. Hou Tjørnen is probably older than the town, which was founded in 1849. For many years, Hou Tjørnen stood alone on a hill and was used as a sea mark for people passing Hov along the coast. Those interested in maritime history can therefore view Hou Tjørnen both in terms of its elevated location and its former function on the coast near Hov. For those interested in culture, the hill and the coastal history of Hov come together at this point.
