Amstrup amid hiking trails, fenland and cultural history

Amstrup Enge is a nutrient-rich fen in Åkær Ådal between Vads Møllevej and Horsens Fjord. Rare species such as samel, leverurt, strandrødtop and slangeurt grow in the coastal meadows of Amstrup Enge. The area is also part of the Important Bird Area “Horsens Fjord, Svanegrund & Endelave”. The figures for the local wildlife also underline the area’s natural significance: a total of 622 large moth species were recorded in the area around Amstrup and Uldrup Bakker from 1989 to 2017. Of these, 541 could be regarded with sufficient certainty as permanently occurring there. Amstrup Pakhus and its history

The historical character of Amstrup includes Amstrup Pakhus (Kvindefængsel), which has been designated a cultural environment in Odder Municipality for the period 1850–1920. The building was originally a warehouse, was erected in 1854 and bore the name “Koeds Palæ”. In 1927, Amstrup Pakhus was sold to the state and established as an annex. There, Straffeanstalten i Horsens housed prisoners as part of a transitional phase before their release.

Brandbygegaard between farm shop and events

In Amstrup, visitors can visit the Brandbygegaard farm shop, which also includes its own winery. At Brandbygegaard, both grapes and apples are used locally. The farm winery and distillery produce various sparkling wines using the Champagne method, as well as brandy, whisky, grappa, gin and vodka. Brandbygegaard also hosts a number of larger and smaller public events every year. Alongside the hiking trails and natural areas, this adds a focus that brings together regional processing, beverages and public events.
