Water and lowland marshes shape Selkær

Selkær reveals itself through its waterscapes and marshlands. Selkær Bæk crosses Selkær Enge from north to south and is a public watercourse. Selkær Enge is a lowland marsh area between Selkær and Kastbjerg, west of Grenå. The area lies at a low elevation and has a basin-shaped profile. The stream therefore runs through a low-lying narrow valley, whose connection to the water system also continues south toward Kolindsund. In Selkær, the marshland, landform, and watercourse form part of a shared landscape description.

Watercourse between Selkær and Kolindsund

The drainage from Selkær Enge runs south toward Kolindsund. Selkær Gl. Å is also part of this water network: It begins in Kastbjerg and flows into Selkær Bæk. At the same time, Selkær Gl. Å is older than Selkær Bæk. Along its course, Selkær Gl. Å connects Kastbjerg with Selkær Bæk, while the drainage from the meadows runs toward Kolindsund. One course flows into the stream, while the other continues south from the meadows.

Meadow areas and landscape region

The larger lowland marsh area near Selkær is also part of the Veggerslev River Valley landscape region. The Selkær Enge area includes a meadow area around the upper course of Skærvad Å. This river flows into Kolindsund slightly west of Grenå and onward into the Kattegat. The meadow area along the upper course complements the marshland with an open meadow landscape. The further course of the river extends the water-connected landscape beyond Kolindsund to the Kattegat. Thus, the water-shaped landscape region stretches from the lowlands near Selkær to the Kattegat.

Historical traces in the open countryside

Rundhøj, Selkjær, is a grass-covered burial mound in cultivated land. For a time, the Herred courthouse site was located near Selkær; later, it was located near Skindbjerg. The courthouse site was therefore initially near Selkær and later near Skindbjerg, while Rundhøj stands as an individual burial mound in cultivated land. Visitors interested in culture can view Rundhøj as a burial mound and the courthouse site, through its relocation over time, as two separate historical subjects.

Selkær Mølle and the open countryside

Near Selkær Mølle, there is a holiday-home area in the open countryside outside the coastal zone, approximately 1.5 km southeast of Glesborg. The area comprises 358 holiday-home plots, of which approximately 130 are undeveloped.
