Lyngby – History, Manor-House Setting and Art

In Lyngby and its surroundings, commemorative culture, historic buildings, a manor-house setting, a beach and contemporary art come together. The Reunification Stone commemorates the reunification of Denmark, while Lyngby Church and Lykkesholm offer different historical perspectives. Holme Beach in the surrounding area and the garden installations at The Garden Studio also add landscape and art.

The Reunification Stone and the former seminary

The Reunification Stone was erected in 1920 by the residents of Lyngby to commemorate the reunification of Denmark. The memorial stone comes from a burial mound in the field of Chr. Meiniche near Søby. Four horses pulled it to Lyngby, where it was placed in front of the former Lyngby Seminary.

Today, the Reunification Stone stands at the corner of Lyngbyvej and Fladstrupvej. It is located on a small gravel-covered area with a flagpole and a trimmed hedge. Lyngby Seminary was founded in 1812 and closed in 1874. The old buildings from the period of Lyngby Seminary are now used as the Grenaa Municipality office for educational and psychological counselling. This complex therefore reflects both the former history of the seminary and its present-day municipal use.

Church, Manor House and Beach

Lyngby Church is a historic chalkstone church on Djursland and was built around 1200. The chalkstone creates a different architectural accent from the former seminary and the manor-house setting. Anyone planning to visit this site as a historical destination should take the local parking situation into account: there are no parking spaces in the immediate vicinity of Lyngby Church. The church therefore represents a distinct historical focus, separate from the history of the seminary.

Lykkesholm is a manor house from the early period between 1500 and 1625 and has been known since the mid-16th century. A manor-house setting with a lime-tree avenue and a park-like garden has been preserved. The lime-tree avenue and the park-like garden give Lykkesholm a landscaped setting. Holme Beach, a beach, is also located in the area surrounding Lyngby. In the surrounding area, Holme Beach represents a coastal landscape. The selection of sites thus ranges from a stone church building and a historic estate to a waterside landscape site, without combining these places into a single destination.

Art in the Garden

The group exhibition “My habitat” opened at The Garden Studio in Lyngby. Its first part consisted of sculptural installations in the garden. The exhibition shifts the focus from historic buildings to sculptural works in the garden. The garden itself is part of the presentation. At Ansegaard, the association The Garden Studio rents an apartment, a gallery and the garden. For culturally interested travellers, this focus expands the historical themes with a contemporary artistic perspective.
