Visitors weighing up hiking trails, local history and nature interests on Djursland will find plenty to explore in Nimtofte. The small village lies in the centre of Djursland. Two hiking trails pass through the village, while the church, barn and cultural centre offer glimpses into different aspects of its history.

Hiking trails and former railway towns

The 42-kilometre Midtdjurssporet passes through Nimtofte. The Gjerrildbanestien also runs through the village. This approximately 28-kilometre route passes through large forests and several small towns that were once railway towns. The lengths provide a useful comparison of the two trails; the Gjerrildbanestien also has a connection to the former railway. Trains ran along the railway section used by this trail from 1911 to 1956.

For hikers interested not only in the route but also in the history of a railway connection, the Gjerrildbanestien offers a tangible historical link. The forests and former railway towns are also part of its described route. The Midtdjurssporet also passes through Nimtofte, but the features mentioned here—the forest landscape and former railway towns—relate to the Gjerrildbanestien.

Outdoor stays and travelling with a dog

The fire shelter and shelters in Nimtofte offer opportunities to spend the night outdoors. Shelter spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The fire shelter in Nimtofte's recreational area is a municipal facility and may be used by everyone, subject to the school's opening hours. Both the allocation of shelter spaces and the conditions for using the fire shelter are useful practical details for visitors.

There is also a named place to visit when travelling with a dog: the dog forest in Nimtofte has two areas, one intended mainly for puppies and small dogs and the other mainly for large dogs. Tourists in the area are welcome to use the dog forest. The areas’ primary intended users reflect how the space is divided without making the two groups into rigid categories.

Golf, activity and nature at Lübker

At Lübker Golf & Spa Resort, pay-and-play golf is available without membership or prior experience. The Lübker Golf Course is a 27-hole championship course. For visitors more interested in an outdoor route, the Hjertesti is also described there: it is five kilometres long and suitable for walking, running and picnicking. The golf course and the Hjertesti therefore offer different activities, each with its own focus.

The nature theme also includes the Lübker nature area near Ådalen. Unique orchids and rare amphibian species thrive there. Together with the Hjertesti, this offers a connection to nature beyond the sporting use of the golf course. Visitors who like to distinguish between outdoor activities and nature interests can consider these as separate ideas for their trip.

Church, barn and cultural centre

Nimtofte Church was built around the 12th century, with a nave, chancel and apse made of granite ashlar and unworked fieldstones. The Præstegårdsladen stands beside the church: the barn dates from 1599 and houses a small agricultural museum with old equipment. The church and barn bring together different historical themes—the construction of the religious building and the agricultural history represented by the museum.

Another part of the local cultural heritage is Nimtofte Kulturhus. It is located in former dairy buildings that were carefully restored in 2015/16 and are now considered an important part of the local cultural heritage. The former dairy, medieval church and 1599 barn give visitors a glimpse of different periods and building traditions in the village. Alongside its hiking trails, these places give Nimtofte a distinctive cultural focus.
