Hovedgård between railway town and countryside

Hovedgård developed as a railway town around the station built in 1868 and the East Jutland railway line from Padborg to Frederikshavn.

Railway town with a preserved townscape

At the corner of Horsensvej and Stationspladsen, Hovedgård’s characteristic triangular merchant’s courtyard has been preserved. Østergade and Nørregade also retain elements of Hovedgård’s earliest development as a railway town. These include several houses built in the Bedre Byggeskik style. The merchant’s courtyard and the houses thus represent two different building functions within the early townscape.

Workshops and Hovedgård Hallen

Vestergade retains low-rise buildings along the street; preserved workshop buildings stand in the backyards. These are connected with the railway town’s former small-scale businesses. Their position along the street and in the courtyards makes the contrast between the public street frontage and the workspaces at the rear visible. Hovedgård Hallen was founded in 1970 by volunteer residents and associations. Its distinctive, sloping roof form is particularly well suited to music. Hovedgård Hallen thus brings together the founding of the associations, its suitability for music and its distinctive roof form.

Tornbjerg and the surrounding countryside

Tornbjerg is a wooded area on a hill in the centre of Hovedgård. Hovedgård extends between Tornbjerg and the railway into the surrounding countryside. Tornbjerg lies in the centre, while the railway forms the second spatial reference for the town’s expansion. Thus, the woodland and railway in Hovedgård belong both to the landscape and to the town’s history.

Shelter, outdoor pool and square at Stationsvej

Shelter Hovedgård is located at the end of Skolebakken and can be reached via the path from the town’s green area. Near the car park on Stationsvej, there is a small square with play equipment, a shelter and a shelter hut with a fire pit. This square is operated by the Hovedgård Citizens’ Association. The car park on Stationsvej lies east of the Tornbjerg woodland in Hovedgård. The shelter at Skolebakken and the square on Stationsvej thus form two separate local connections: one at the green area and one east of the Tornbjerg woodland. At the square on Stationsvej, play equipment, the shelter and the shelter hut with a fire pit are grouped together.

Hovedgård Outdoor Pool

Hovedgård Outdoor Pool is located at Fruenshave 7 in Hovedgård. In addition to the historic streets, the woodland and the facilities on Stationsvej, there is therefore a separate connection with swimming. The outdoor pool thus represents the theme of swimming, while the railway, streets and Tornbjerg mark other local connections.

Ørridslev Church in the surrounding area

Ørridslev Church, located near Hovedgård, was built in the first half of the 12th century. In the area surrounding Hovedgård, the church lies among fields. It is known for its well-preserved frescoes, which are among the oldest in Denmark.
