Landscape with a Clear Village Structure

Assendrup lies in a low-lying landscape surrounding a small erosion valley. At the same time, the surroundings are scenic and topographically distinctive; they are designated as a national geological area of interest.

The village structure of Assendrup combines a roadside village (vejforteby) and a fortification village (fortelandsby). One section of the road has been widened into a roadside square known as a Forte. This structure is still recognizable because the settlement is approximately the same size today as it was in the 19th century.

Watercourse, Paths and Landscape

The Brandteich in the Forte of Assendrup is still visible in the form of a protected watercourse and runs parallel to the main road. In the Overdrev, site 176, in the Vedslet–Assendrup area, dry, hilly terrain, exposed stones and numerous anthills shape the landscape. Assendrup also has a footpath between Vedsletvej and Assendrupvej.

From the Rosenkær property at Assendrupvej 12, a 500-metre footpath leads via a roadway to Assendrupstenen. When planning the route to Assendrupstenen, the 500 metres from the Rosenkær property can be considered as a separate section; it leads via a roadway. Assendrup Gårdbutik is located in the village of Assendrup near Hovedgård, a little north of Horsens. It sells beef, lamb, veal, eggs, smoked goods and ice cream.

Stones with History and Tradition

Assendrupstenen is the longest known stone in East Jutland. It is almost 6 metres long and, according to the best estimate, weighs 80 tonnes. The stone came to light in 1938 when gravel was extracted at this site. Its extraordinary dimensions and discovery history give the site a particularly distinctive connection to the geological formations of the surrounding area.

Troldesten lies 1 kilometre west of Assendrup and 100 metres south of Ørredevej. For orientation west of Assendrup, its location on Ørredevej provides an additional reference point. According to local legend, it was hurled by a troll from Fruering Church towards Vedslet Church. In Assendrup, near the farm where the old schoolhouse and the Elisabeth-Dorothea Hospital of 1791 once stood, there is a memorial stone.

Assendrup by Cycle Routes and Footpaths

Cycle Route 7 towards Hov Havn passes through Assendrup. For cyclists, Route 5 involves a short detour around Assendrup, while Route 7 passes through the village towards Hov Havn. Kulturringen is a 540-kilometre cycle route offering cultural and nature experiences in East Jutland. Kulturringen’s 540 kilometres provide a different planning framework for a longer journey through East Jutland than the short detour of Route 5 around Assendrup. Kulturringen’s Route 5 runs from Torrild to Alken; a short detour takes it around Assendrup.
