Horsens between Fjord Nature and Urban History

Horsens combines historic urban experiences with fjord landscapes and nature trails. If you want to choose between culture, strolls, longer hikes and a visit to the beach during your trip, the town offers a range of options – from museums and medieval structures to lakes, protected areas and Horsens Fjord.

Urban History and Museums in Horsens

Horsens Art Museum collects experimental contemporary art, with a focus on Danish art. It has been located in Caroline Amalielund Park since 1984; art is displayed both outdoors and inside the building. The Prison Museum offers a historical perspective on another institution. In the historic buildings of the former state prison, the museum presents 153 years of prison life from the perspective of prisoners and prison staff.

The Prison Museum also includes a reconstructed escape tunnel measuring 18 metres in length. Carl August Lorentzen dug it beneath the prison yard in 1949. In the centre of Horsens, the late medieval settlement structure has also been preserved, with narrow, deep plots. In parts of Søndergade and Nørregade, the half-timbered gabled houses in the courtyards have been preserved. Here, urban history is reflected not only in individual buildings but also in the structure of the city centre.

Industrimuseet engages several senses: visitors can experience history directly through touch, hearing, smell and taste. They can also work on an assembly line. Grønhøj and Slangebjerg are part of the area's older history. Grønhøj is a well-preserved passage grave that is more than 5,000 years old, located in the Bygholm Lake and Rugballegård Forest nature area in Horsens. At Slangebjerg, the foundations and ditches of King Erik Menved's castle are publicly visible.

Hiking, Nature and Beaches by the Fjord

Bygholm Lake near the centre of Horsens offers walks along its wooded shores and is suitable for hiking, running and mountain biking. A 7.5-kilometre route also runs around the lake and is suitable for hiking and running. Nørrestrand is a wildlife reserve near Horsens with a large freshwater lake and a river delta connecting the area to Horsens Fjord. The complete circular route around Nørrestrand is 13 kilometres long.

For a longer tour, the signposted Fjordmino is available: the 59-kilometre circular hiking trail runs around Horsens Fjord and includes several islands and ferry crossings. The main route is marked with red arrows and dots, while shorter circular routes are signposted with yellow arrows.

Another option is Langelinie City Beach. The beach is one kilometre from the centre of Horsens and has a sandy beach with a 100-metre-long bathing jetty.
