Metelsdorf is situated in a hilly terminal moraine landscape that formed during the last ice age around 10,000 years ago.

History

Archaeological finds in the ground at Metelsdorf document the municipality’s early settlement history. Near Klüssendorf, the Bronze Age burial mound Tridamsberg was built around 2000 BC. For almost 600 years, large parts of the municipality of Metelsdorf belonged to the Holy Spirit Hospital of the city of Wismar.

The Metelsdorf springs supplied Wismar with drinking water for more than 400 years, until 1967. From exit 8 of the A20 motorway, Wismar-Mitte, the springs can be reached via the B208 and local roads as far as Maibruchweg.

Nature and Trails

At the Metelsdorf Erratic Boulder Garden, a granite boulder from Småland in Sweden, approximately 1.8 billion years old, forms the centerpiece. The site covers a 2,000-square-meter green space.

The Metelsdorf Erratic Boulder Garden is located along a six-kilometer nature and history hiking trail between Metelsdorf and Schulenbrook. Its circular route includes a glacial kettle depression and the Metelsdorf springs. Signage at the Erratic Boulder Garden explains the age, origin, color, and use of the boulders. There is a rest area at the Erratic Boulder Garden.
