Barnekow: Hotels and Accommodations
A 5.8-kilometer-long cycle path connects Barnekow with Wismar. At the same time, the history of the village dates back to its first documented mention in 1230.
History
Barnekow was first documented in 1230. From 1359 until around 1600, the Plessen knights of Barnekow were based at a castle. The presumed twin castle is represented by a double hill that is still visible.
In 1717, a farm called “Außenland” was established in Barnekow. During the Thirty Years’ War, the village was looted repeatedly and almost completely destroyed in March 1718. The Barnekow estate belonged to the von Ladiges family from 1789 to 1864 and to the von Behr-Negendanck family from 1888 to 1945.
Villagescape
The former manor house of Barnekow was demolished by blasting in 1989; a green space was created on its site. After the old smithy was demolished between 1987 and 1988, a building with a restaurant was erected on its site.
Church and Surroundings
In ecclesiastical terms, Barnekow belongs to the Protestant parish of Gressow-Friedrichshagen, which includes the churches in Gressow and Friedrichshagen. One typical brick church of this parish is considered, in its present form, to be a building from the mid-14th century. One church of the parish is considered to feature furnishings from the 18th century and a Winzer organ. One brick church of the parish is considered to be open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Easter until Reformation Day.
