Šlaveitai: Hotels and Accommodation

In Šlaveitai, the Owl House at 2 Sodų St. is a visitor attraction and a small natural oasis. Visitors can view nesting boxes for owls and other birds there; the house also displays drawings and sculptures of owls. The unmown meadows around the Owl House are considered a refuge for insects.

Culture and History

The original cemetery chapel of Šlaveitai was demolished in 1989 and replaced by a chapel made of white bricks. At an intersection in Šlaveitai, a cross with two crossbars and a wayside shrine were erected in 1914.

Šlaveitai is also the place where the Lithuanian writer and book smuggler Stasė Paulauskaitė–Vaineikienė was born and grew up. A postcard from Matas Šalčius to Bronislava Šalčiuvienė is associated with Šlaveitai and dated 2 July 1913.

The Erškėtynas Chapel is considered a place where the faithful continue to gather, especially at Pentecost, to sing hymns and pray to the Virgin Mary.

Surroundings

The nearby Lazdininkai windmill was moved from Padvariai to Lazdininkai; before that, it had stood in Vilnius. It is possible to visit the interior by prior telephone arrangement.

Near Darbėnai lies the Japanese Garden, covering around 16 hectares. It includes a bonsai collection, a rock garden, sakura trees, and ponds. In Darbėnai, an educational weaving programme provides knowledge about the functions of a loom and gives participants the opportunity to weave themselves.
