Rūdaičiai: Hotels and Accommodation

The Rūdaičiai hillfort has been a state-protected cultural heritage site since 2005. It is dated from the first millennium to the 13th century.

The hillfort can be reached from the Rūdaičiai–Vydmantai road after approximately 450 metres and by crossing the Žiba stream.

Culture and History

Rūdaičiai was first mentioned in 1571, when 19 families lived there. Local tradition recounts that people once hid at Pilalė and defended themselves there against enemies.

Landscape

The Tenžė flows along the eastern edge of Rūdaičiai, and the Žiba along its southwestern edge. The Kumpiškio Forest lies south of Rūdaičiai. The Žiba was dammed to form a pond in Rūdaičiai.

Pilgrimage Route and Religious Sites

The St James Way includes the Kretinga–Rūdaičiai–Žibininkai section. Near Rūdaičiai there is a chapel connected with the St James Way, which was built in 1990 with funds donated by local resident Stanislovas Mažeika. Alkos Hill, a sacred hill, is located in the southern part of Rūdaičiai. There is also a small shrine in Rūdaičiai with a statue of Merciful Mary.
