Misterhult: Church Landscape, Hiking Trails and Archipelago

Church, Cemetery and Local History

Misterhult Church is at the centre of the area’s cultural history. The neoclassical church has a bell-shaped cupola, symmetrically arranged windows and smooth façades. It was built between 1777 and 1780 and, as a representative parish church from the late 18th century, has significant cultural and historical value.

The surroundings of Misterhult Church include, in addition to the church and churchyard, two chapels, the vicarage and the parish hall. On the Old Cemetery, the sacristy of Misterhult’s oldest church has been preserved. West of the old churchyard, there is a small pond during high water that was once a lake. You should understand this historical feature as a former landscape form, not as a permanent body of water.

The wider surroundings are also marked by prehistoric traces: Misterhultsbygden is the place in Sweden with the largest number of Bronze Age graves. Misterhult’s hembygdsgård also offers an insight into the lives of the local population. It has 17 buildings and more than 2,000 objects reflecting this life. Visits to Misterhult’s hembygdsgård are booked through the local heritage association.

Pine Forest, Burial Ground and Archipelago

The Talldungen Nature Reserve protects an old, valuable pine forest on a glacial gravel moraine. The pines there are on average about 200 years old; the oldest are almost 250 years old. The nature reserve also contains a small burial ground with three stone settings and several standing stones.

The Misterhult Archipelago Nature Reserve is located in the area around Misterhult and comprises around 2,000 islands, islets, skerries, rocks and shallows. The natural landscape therefore extends from the forested glacial moraine to a varied archipelago landscape. The different landscape areas give your stay a clear thematic range without requiring you to commit to a single experience.

Hiking in Different Formats

The Ostkustleden passes through Misterhult and is suitable for hiking. The trail is 160 kilometres long and divided into eight stages of approximately 20 kilometres each. In addition, Skomakareslingan is a 5.2-kilometre circular hiking trail. The two figures represent distinctly different trail formats: a route divided into stages for several days and a single circular trail.

Misterhult also has a lit fitness trail suitable for a quiet walk. The documented network of trails thus includes both the long Ostkustleden and shorter options for a manageable loop. For geographical orientation, Misterhult is located on the E22 between Oskarshamn and Västervik.
